Purpose Statement

The job of Para educator – Functional Adaptive (FA) is to provide support to the instructional program within the assigned classroom with specific responsibilities for assisting in the supervision, care and instruction of special needs students in the general education classroom or in a self-contained classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing information to appropriate school personnel;

and attending IEP meetings.

This role is distinguished by supporting students with high needs and behaviors/sensory regulation, social emotional, communication, fine/motor, and medical support (e.g., tube feeding, catheterization, diapering, toileting).

Essential Functions

  • Adapt classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
  • Administer immediate first aid and medical assistance as instructed by a health care professional (e.g., diapering, tube feeding, colostomy bags, etc.) to meet health care needs.
  • Assist students, teachers, and other certificated personnel in implementing instruction and/or IEPs.
  • Attend meetings and trainings (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, de-escalation training, etc.) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
  • Develop instruction under the supervision of the assigned teacher in a variety of individual and group activities to evaluate student progress on IEP objectives and ensure student success.
  • Implement behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders under supervision.
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times following HIPAA, FERPA, IEP guidelines in accordance with district, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records to ensure availability of items and meet mandated requirements.
  • Monitor students during assigned periods within various school environments to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Observe and collect information to be recorded via data sheets to support progress of student goals and objectives.
  • Provide clerical and general classroom assistance for staff (e.g., collecting and inputting data, correspondence, copying, filing, preparing, and organizing classroom materials) to document student progress and support learning goals.
  • Supervise students in school setting to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Work under both direct and indirect supervision using standardized routines to ensure a safe and positive learning environment.

Other Functions

  • Perform other related duties as assigned; may be assigned to a student as a 1:1 para educator to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
