Under the direction of the assigned supervisor, the Corrections Officer 2 (Lateral) performs more complex detention duties based on increased experience in a detention facility. Incumbents perform booking, searching, releasing, transportation, supervision and security work for the Sheriff's Office Jail. Employees are expected to handle a variety of potentially volatile and dangerous situations in a calm and competent manner. Employees in this classification are responsible for the operation of the Sheriff's Office Jail on a 24 hour, 7 day a week basis.

Work is reviewed by the Corrections Sergeant through observation and evaluation of demonstrated ability to handle a variety of work situations Kitsap County Sheriff's Office values the wellness of our Corrections staff. We offer a work schedule that consists of 10 hr. 40 minute shifts, which consists of workweeks that are 5 days on/4 days off two weeks in a row, and then 5 days on/5 days off the third week.

Required Education and Experience High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); AND Completion of Washington State Criminal Justice Corrections Academy or completed the Department of Corrections CORE program from 1/2004 – 7/2021, or have an equivalent certification that is recognized by CJTC; AND Successfully complete the agency's corrections FTO/training programs. Successfully complete WSCJTC Equivalency Academy within one year of hire.

Please Note:

Applicants that have been separated from employment for more than one year as a federal, state, county or municipal Corrections Officer do not qualify for the lateral position and can apply for the Corrections Officer 1 position. Employment from other law enforcement agencies will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and will be subject to Kitsap County Human Resources and CJTC review.

Candidates determined by CJTC to not be equivalent will still be eligible for the entry level position. Applicants will be disqualified if they have resigned in lieu of being terminated for cause or were discharged for disqualifying misconduct from a full-time commissioned law enforcement position, in accordance with RCW 43.101.

Preferred Education, Experience and Other Qualifications Washington State lateral candidates that do not have to attend the equivalency academy will receive 5% preference points added to the overall score.

Required Licenses, Certificates, Examinations/Tests and Other Requirements The incumbent is responsible for obtaining and maintaining all of the following required licenses, certifications and other requirements. Prior to employment the successful candidate must:
Have completed Washington State Criminal Justice Corrections Academy or completed the Department of Corrections CORE program from 1/2004 – 7/2021, or have an equivalent certification that is recognized by CJTC Pass multi-phased testing process including physical agility, oral board interview, credit and criminal background check, and a lie detection examination. Pass medical/physical and psychological evaluation requirements. Submit a copy of their State employment driving record to verify their eligibility to drive for Kitsap County.
