WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 2 to join the Olympic Region maintenance team and help keep Washington's transportation system safe, reliable, and operating efficiently. In this journey‑level role, you will operate a variety of highway maintenance equipment and tools to perform skilled maintenance and repair work on highways and highway structures that support the safe movement of people and commerce.

You will also respond to emergencies, weather events, and other operational needs while helping maintain WSDOT's transportation infrastructure, facilities, and fleet. This position may provide direction to maintenance crews in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3 and plays a key role in promoting safety, environmental stewardship, and a respectful, collaborative workplace.

This full‑time position is scheduled for four (4) 10‑hour shifts per week (40 hours total). The schedule may include Monday through Friday or other assigned days based on operational needs. Employees must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, extended hours, alternate shifts, and emergency assignments as needed. This position participates in standby and rotational shift assignments, including night shifts, and requires responding to emergency situations in all weather conditions.

When on standby or called back after hours, employees must be able to report to their assigned duty station within 60 minutes. Travel is an expectation of the position and may be required on a regular, sporadic, or as‑needed basis. Overnight travel is required.

• Perform skilled highway maintenance activities, including pavement repair, drainage maintenance, sign and guardrail repair, vegetation management, erosion control, and roadside cleanup.
• Operate Class A, B, and C highway maintenance equipment, vehicles, and tools to complete roadway maintenance and transport equipment and materials between job sites.
• Maintain safe and passable roadways by performing snow and ice control operations, applying anti‑icing materials, hauling maintenance materials, and maintaining stockpile sites.
• Respond to emergencies by establishing traffic control, supporting lane and road closures, assisting at incident scenes, and coordinating with partner agencies.
• Inspect and maintain highway maintenance equipment, tools, vehicles, and WSDOT facilities to ensure safe and efficient operations.
• Document daily work activities, inventories, damage estimates, time records, and operational data using computerized systems and Microsoft Office applications.
• Follow established safety policies and procedures by participating in safety planning and training, using required personal protective equipment, and promoting a safe work environment.
• Assist with special maintenance assignments, unlawful dwelling cleanup, and crew coordination, including providing training and guidance to coworkers in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.
