Position: Parks Maintenance Worker I,II,III  (Part-Time)

Overview

Semi-skilled and manual work in maintaining various grounds, fields, and facilities. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City. This position is considered an essential position for Emergency Management, with duties assigned as needed.

Work Schedule

Works varied hours including weekends and holidays. This position requires 24 hours a day, 7 days per week availability during City of Port St. Lucie emergencies, as determined by City Administrators, Emergency Manager or City Officials.

Salary

The starting salary for this position depends on qualifications and is as follows:

  • Parks Maintenance Worker I - $20.21 - $23.24
  • Parks Maintenance Worker II - $21.22 - $24.40
  • Parks Maintenance Worker III - $22.28 - $25.63
Responsibilities (illustrative)
  • Perform grounds, fields, and park maintenance including mowing, weed control, tilling, raking, digging, painting, irrigation maintenance, and related tasks.
  • Prepare fields, grounds, and courts for athletic activities; set up picnic and other areas; perform litter control and restroom cleaning.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment; provide preventative maintenance; conduct daily reports; inform the public in facility use.
  • Assist in maintaining equipment and facilities; perform semi-skilled labor; undertake sodding, seeding, edging, mulching, and similar work in parks and City grounds.
  • Execute duties in support of emergency management when required.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Attendance and Shifts

Performs work according to departmental needs; related duties may be assigned.

Education and/or Experience

Parks Maintenance Worker I — Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent; two (2) years of grounds maintenance experience; substitution possible with training/education/experience.

Parks Maintenance Worker II — Graduation from high school or equivalent; one (1) year as Parks Maintenance Worker I; three (3) years of grounds maintenance experience; one (1) year of experience operating moderately heavy trucks or similar equipment; substitution allowed.

Parks Maintenance Worker III — Graduation from high school or equivalent; two (2) years as Parks Maintenance Worker II; four (4) years of grounds maintenance experience; one (1) year of experience operating moderately heavy trucks or similar equipment; substitution allowed.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Parks Maintenance Worker I:
    Valid driver’s license; ability to obtain Florida license within 30 days; CPSI/AFO/CPO preferred.
  • Parks Maintenance Worker II:
    Valid driver’s license with clean driving record; CDL Class B; ability to obtain BMP Certification within 9 months; CPSI/AFO/CPO preferred.
  • Parks Maintenance Worker III:
    Valid driver’s license with clean record; CDL Class A;
    Limited Lawn and Ornamental Certification; BMP Certification; CPSI/AFO/CPO preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of groundskeeping practices, tools, and equipment; ability to operate and perform preventative maintenance on equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor under varying weather conditions; follow written and oral instructions; communicate effectively; and establish positive working relationships with City staff and the public.
  • Ability to focus on positive outcomes, model respect, stay centered under challenge, and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to operate equipment and perform duties as assigned; ability to work as part of a team.
Physical Demands and Work Environment

The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met to perform the essential functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made. The employee frequently walks, stands, kneels, bends, reaches, talks, and hears; may lift up to 25 pounds regularly and up to 80 pounds occasionally; may climb ladders up to 15 feet. Vision requirements include close, distance, color, and focus adjustment.

The work environment may include fumes, chemicals, outdoor conditions, and moderate to loud noise.
