This is a part-time (less than 20 hours per week) position without a set schedule. Must be available to work as needed over the entire summer, including evenings or weekends. No medical benefits but accrues 1 hour of sick time per 40 hours worked & able to access City’s Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Job Summary

The Library Associate Storytime Substitute is a part‑time (less than 20 hours per week) position. It primarily fills storytime substitute duties with a youth services focus, including planning and implementing story times. The role may also assist with the annual Summer Reading Program, other kid and teen programs in the library and community as needed. As a substitute, the associate may support other programming, reference, and readers advisory.

Hours are as needed to fill in for staff absences; they may include evenings and weekends.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Courteously respond to patrons in person.
  • Assist patrons with reference and readers‑advisory services, PTPLs public catalog and available digital or electronic resources. Research resources to respond to patron needs; refer patrons to a librarian or other resources as needed.
  • Develop and present a variety of library programs.
  • Identify, report and address safety and security issues. Refer to appropriate authorities as needed.
  • Assist with designing and set‑up displays as assigned.
  • Provide excellent customer service practices, helping patrons find materials, use library technology, learn about library programs, and understand city and library policies, or directing them to regular staff.
SPECIAL AREA OF FOCUS - Youth Services
  • Under the general supervision of the library managers, assist with early literacy, special programming and outreach programs related to youth services. Perform basic library functions including reference and readers‑advisory.
  • Assist library managers in planning and presenting programs for children from birth through age 18, both in and out of the library, through library programs and library outreach.
  • Assist library managers in planning and presenting the annual Summer Reading Program for all ages.

Skills And Abilities
  • Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
  • Establish positive working relationships; serve the public (adults, teens, children) courteously and work collaboratively with library staff.
  • Assist patrons with current and emerging library technology, including digital media.
  • Perform alphanumeric filing accurately and learn and utilize the Dewey Decimal System.
  • Work effectively as part of a team.
  • Use initiative and independent judgment in a wide variety of situations.
  • Recognize and set priorities, plan, organize and coordinate own work.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Work a schedule that may change periodically, including evenings and weekends; be flexible to meet the needs of PTPL.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or a minimum of four years of academic training beyond high school in a field compatible with library service, plus at least one year of related work experience. Additional experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
