Job Description

PORT TOWNSEND SCHOOL DISTRICT

The interventionist teacher is a professional with advanced preparation and experience in mathematics who has the responsibility (e.g., providing instruction, serving as a resource to teachers) for mathematics performance of students in general and of struggling students in particular.

Qualifications
  • Hold a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate for grades K-5. A valid Washington State special education endorsement is also preferred.
  • Significant professional development in math or intervention instruction in the elementary grades.
  • Endorsement in mathematics and/or experience teaching intervention groups in this subject is desired.
  • Support MTSS systems as a collaborator, consultant and interventionist.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching skills in mathematics. Ability and willingness to utilize research‑based practices to support and enrich classroom math instruction for each student.
  • Knowledge of Common Core State Standards in mathematics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of elementary curriculum and tiered interventions, including a preference for experience with Bridges in Mathematics.
  • Demonstrated ability to use a variety of instructional and assessment strategies to measure instructional and program effectiveness and the ability to adapt instruction, curriculum, and program to meet a wide range of student abilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage information, and to keep precise and accurate records and other forms of documentation, including a School‑Wide Title 1 plan, and maintain student and school‑wide assessments.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development; as evidenced by participation in building, district and state workshops, staff development, and recent coursework relevant to effective teaching.
  • Demonstrated skill in collecting student data and using data to make instructional decisions for each student.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate regularly with teacher colleagues, for mutual interest and benefit to student growth and success in mathematics.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional achievement and growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with students while inspiring and motivating excellence in student performance.
  • Demonstrated background of success in working with learning differences and implementing trauma‑informed practices.
  • Possess natural abilities, strong communication skills, flexibility, and love of teaching.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and flexibly with administrators, staff and families to determine and achieve school goals and develop a positive school climate.
  • Demonstrated understanding and support of place‑based learning.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Work collaboratively with grade level teams to maximize student learning in mathematics, including intervention for students who struggle to learn. Design opportunities for flexible groupings for math instruction.
  • Work collaboratively with a variety of staff members to support instructional improvement in mathematics, including special education staff, para educators, and other specialists.
  • Coordinate and analyze school‑wide math data. Facilitate math data discussions at grade level meetings.
  • Support and inform a process of continuous formative assessment in math at each grade level and the cycle of inquiry that supports quality math instruction.
  • Provide assistance and guidance to individual students and teachers – 'whatever it takes' sense of teacher efficacy.
  • Coordinate effective tutoring opportunities for our struggling math students.
  • Collaborate with Instructional Leaders to improve and revise math intervention services as needed. Collect data to assist with the school improvement process.
