Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN)

The Psychiatric Registered Nurse (RN) is a skilled and empathetic nursing professional responsible for providing comprehensive, trauma-informed care to patients with acute and chronic behavioral health conditions. This role requires strong clinical judgment, emotional resilience, and the ability to manage complex situations in a fast-paced, therapeutic environment. The Psych RN collaborates with psychiatrists, therapists, interdisciplinary team members, and support staff to ensure safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Apply the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for patients with diverse psychiatric diagnoses
• Conduct mental status exams, behavioral assessments, and risk assessments for suicide or harm
• Administer psychiatric medications, treatments, and therapeutic interventions as prescribed
• Monitor and document patient responses to interventions, medication effects, and behavioral changes
• Participate in developing and updating individualized treatment plans with the interdisciplinary team
• Lead or assist with crisis intervention, de-escalation, and emergency psychiatric response situations
• Provide therapeutic communication and support to patients experiencing emotional distress
• Educate patients and families on diagnoses, medications, coping strategies, and discharge planning
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record (EHR)
• Ensure compliance with safety protocols, including observation checks and elopement precautions
• Support trauma-informed care practices and uphold patient rights, dignity, and confidentiality
Minimum Requirements
• Current Registered Nurse License in the state of practice
• Minimum one year of professional nursing experience; psychiatric or behavioral health experience preferred
• Completion of Amergis' Competency Program (if applicable)
• Current BLS certification (CPI or equivalent crisis-intervention certification preferred)
• TB screening and required health clearances
• Compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations
• Successful completion of new hire orientation and behavioral health training
• Understanding of patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Basic computer literacy
• Must be at least 18 years of age
