Dispatcher – Ozaukee County Sheriff’s Office
Starting Rate of Pay 2025: $25.91 – $33.10 (based on experience) with a comprehensive benefits package and WI Retirement System.
Lateral transfers accepted.
Position summary: The Dispatcher’s primary responsibility is to receive and transmit reliable information to facilitate communications for law enforcement, fire and EMS personnel 24/7 during emergency and non‑emergency operations; make inquiries with local, state, and federal data resources; record a variety of data and complete other duties as assigned. Dispatchers are often the first point of contact for people in desperate need of help.
Candidates must work well under stress, remain calm, keep their wits about them, and interpret callers’ situations to provide the exact emergency services needed.
- Communicate with police, fire, and EMS staff via radio.
- Communicate with the public via phone in both emergency and non‑emergency capacity.
- Assess information and route as needed.
- Manage hostile or volatile situations via the telephone.
- Multi‑task phone calls and radio transmissions simultaneously to send appropriate assistance in a timely manner.
- Process ambulance requests following EMD protocols and participate in ongoing reviews and trainings in EMD procedures.
- Assist in giving life‑saving directions to civilians over the phone.
- Perform inquiries with local, state, and federal databases.
- Enter, update, and cancel files regarding wanted persons, missing persons, stolen property, and restraining orders.
- Process teletype messages and respond or route accordingly.
- Provide support services to all divisions within the Sheriff’s Office as needed, including processing requests for criminal history records, name/address/call history, and researching suspect information.
- Enter pertinent information provided by the caller and officer into the Records Management System.
- General high school diploma or GED.
- Previous experience in dispatching, law enforcement, fire, or EMS operations preferred but not required.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Time System Advanced Certification.
- Emergency Medical Dispatch Certification.
- CPR.
- Incident Command System.
- IPAWS Certification.
- Knowledge of radio‑telephone operations and procedures.
- Knowledge of procedures used in operating Computer Aided Dispatch and 9‑1‑1 systems.
- Ability to follow policies and procedures of receiving and processing emergency calls.
- Ability to use computer systems/software currently used in the Dispatch Department.
- Knowledge of law enforcement codes, practices, and methods.
- Knowledge of City, state, and federal laws as they apply to public safety dispatching.
- Knowledge of call screening techniques and phone etiquette.
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written forms.
- Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio‑economic, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
- Frequent periods of sitting while using a computer.
- Infrequent periods of lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Work is performed indoors in an office environment.
- May occasionally deal with irritated, agitated, hostile or violent individuals.
