District-Wide Choral Accompanist (Grades 6–12)
Position Title: District-Wide Choral Accompanist (Grades 6–12) Employment Status: Part-Time Compensation: $20.00 per hour Reports To: High School Choral Director (for scheduling and coordination purposes)
Position SummaryThe District-Wide Choral Accompanist provides piano accompaniment and musical support for the district's grades 6–12 choral program. This position collaborates closely with the choral directors at the intermediate school, middle school, and high school to support rehearsals, performances, festivals, auditions, and other choral activities. The accompanist serves students across multiple buildings and travels between schools as needed to meet the needs of the district's choral program.
The position offers a flexible work schedule coordinated with the district choral department to meet the instructional and performance needs of each school.
- Provide piano accompaniment for choral rehearsals and performances for grades 6–12.
- Collaborate with the Intermediate School Choral Director, Middle School Choral Director, and High School Choral Director to support instructional goals and student achievement.
- Accompany concerts, festivals, contests, auditions, assemblies, and other performances as assigned.
- Assist students during rehearsals by supporting vocal instruction, sectional work, and musical preparation.
- Prepare and practice assigned music prior to rehearsals and performances.
- Maintain effective communication with all three choral directors regarding scheduling, repertoire, and performance needs.
- Travel between district schools to provide accompaniment services.
- Demonstrate professionalism, reliability, flexibility, and responsiveness in supporting multiple school schedules and performance calendars.
- Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the district choral program.
- Proficiency in piano performance and accompaniment. Must be able to play choral ISSMA Group I accompaniments.
- Ability to read and interpret choral scores and piano reductions.
- Strong sight-reading skills are preferred.
- Experience accompanying vocal ensembles and/or school music programs preferred.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, staff, and administrators.
- Reliable transportation for travel between district buildings.
- This is a part-time position with a flexible schedule coordinated in collaboration with the District Choral Department based on the needs of the grades 6–12 choral program.
- The accompanist will provide services at the intermediate school, middle school, and high school.
- Rehearsal and performance schedules vary among the three school levels; therefore, work hours will fluctuate throughout the school year.
- Schedule times for the intermediate school, middle school, and high school will be coordinated according to each building's instructional and performance calendar.
- Additional hours may be required for evening concerts, festivals, contests, auditions, and special performances.
- Flex days are built into the position to accommodate variations in school schedules, performance dates, and rehearsal needs.
- Scheduling and coordination of work hours will be managed by the High School Choral Director in consultation with the Intermediate and Middle School Choral Directors and the District Choral Department.
- Hourly rate: $20.00 per hour
- Hours will vary based on rehearsal schedules, performances, festivals, auditions, and other approved choral activities.
- Concert compensation will be agreed upon and paid by the Portage Music Boosters.
- Mileage reimbursement for required travel between district schools during the workday will be provided in accordance with Portage Township Schools district policy.
- Ability to sit, stand, and move between rehearsal and performance spaces.
- Ability to transport personal music and related materials as needed.
- Ability to travel between district buildings.
The District-Wide Choral Accompanist plays a vital role in supporting a comprehensive and collaborative choral program that serves students in grades 6–12 across the district.
