We are seeking a highly capable Second Class Power Engineer to join our Utilities & Refrigeration team at Roquette’s state‑of‑the‑art 1st-Class Steam/Refrigeration Facility. In this role, you will operate and maintain complex utility systems—including steam, refrigeration, compressed air, plant water, potable water, wastewater, fire suppression, and natural gas—while ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient plant performance.

This position requires strong technical judgment, disciplined execution, and a high degree of situational awareness. Success in this role means maintaining continuous, stable plant operations, rapidly diagnosing issues, and making sound decisions that keep our people, processes, and products safe.

This is an on‑site, full‑time shift position at our Portage la Prairie, MB location.

What You’ll Do:
Operate & Maintain Critical Utility Systems
  • Operate high‑pressure boilers, chillers, refrigeration systems, air compressors/dryers, water treatment systems, potable water, and wastewater systems within design and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor and adjust system parameters (temperature, pressure, water chemistry, liquid levels, etc.) to maintain safe and efficient performance.
  • Perform mechanical troubleshooting and minor repairs across all assigned utility systems.
  • Maintain accurate logbooks, system records, and operational documentation.
Ensure Safe, Compliant, Reliable Operation
  • Follow all Roquette safety expectations, SOPs, and lockout/tagout and confined space procedures.
  • Conduct daily equipment safety checks and participate in hazard assessments, toolbox talks, and incident investigations.
  • Support equipment isolations and safe work practices, contributing to continuous improvement in safety and reliability.
Control Room & DCS Operations
  • Monitor, start up, and shut down utilities equipment from the Distributed Control System (DCS).
  • Coordinate critical activities during plant upsets, evacuations, or utility disruptions.
Quality & Regulatory Stewardship
  • Ensure steam, water, and chilled fluids meet HACCP and product‑quality parameters.
  • Adjust system variables to maintain compliance with quality and productivity standards.
Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Work closely with Maintenance, Engineering, and Process to troubleshoot and optimize equipment performance.
  • Participate in training new hires and supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the Utilities function.
  • Maintain confidentiality related to plant operations.
What You’ll Need:
Education
  • A valid Class 2 Power Engineer License (required).
Experience
  • 5–7 years of experience in an industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Hands‑on experience operating large‑scale utility systems—steam generation, refrigeration with glycol, compressed air, fire protection, water systems, and power distribution.
  • Strong troubleshooting ability, including diagnosing utility failures and responding under pressure.
  • Control room experience coordinating complex operational activities.
  • Maintenance capability to support reliability and prioritize work effectively.
Skills & Core Traits
  • Strong problem‑solving and analytical capability.
  • High level of self‑discipline and situational awareness.
  • Ability to interpret manuals, engineering drawings, MSDS, and SOPs.
  • Good working knowledge of applicable ASME, CSA Codes and provincial regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with CMMS/SAP and digital logbooks.
  • Clear, professional communication and collaboration with cross‑functional teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to safety, ethics, and Roquette values.
Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

This is a full‑time position in a 24/7 manufacturing environment. Candidates must be able to work 12‑hour shifts, including coverage for vacation, sick leave, and business‑driven scheduling needs.

Working Conditions
  • Ability to work in hot, cold, wet, noisy, and variable indoor/outdoor conditions.
  • Ability to climb ladders, stairs, catwalks, work at heights, and enter confined spaces.
  • Ability to wear required PPE including respirators, SCBA, and fall protection.
