Instructional Aide I

Instructional Aide I will, under supervision of the site administrator(s) and direction of a Certificated employee, perform a variety of necessary duties of a responsible nature to assist in the planning and implementation of an effective learning program for children.

Required qualifications include knowledge of district policies and procedures, operation of office machines, basic record-keeping techniques, correct English usage, oral and written communication skills, child growth and development principles, applicable sections of the State Education Code and other applicable laws. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships, make simple arithmetic calculations, perform routine clerical duties, monitor and report student behavior, assist with instruction and related activities in a classroom or assigned learning environment, read, interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures, compile, maintain, and submit accurate and complete records and reports, operate instructional and office equipment following proper instruction, assist a Certificated employee with assigned instructional activities, verify accuracy and completeness of documents and process data, understand and follow both oral and written directions, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, speak and understand Spanish (desirable), meet schedules and deadlines, plan and organize work, print and write legibly, and work confidentially.

Experience and education equivalent to possession of an Associate of Arts degree and/or sixty (60) completed semester units of college/university coursework and one (1) year of experience in working with children/youth in an organized setting is required.

Essential functions of this position include performing a wide variety of specialized and responsible work independently, interpreting and applying rules and regulations as appropriate, following district and school guidelines to protect student health, safety and well being, tutoring individuals or small groups of students, assisting the teacher with individual learning activities, implementing lessons and lesson plans initiated by the teacher, implementing instructional strategies developed by the teacher, reviewing and reinforcing learning activities initiated by the teacher, under teacher direction, assessing student needs and progress, administering and scoring a variety of tests according to established guidelines, implementing student behavioral policies as directed by Certificated staff, monitoring and reporting behavior of students according to approved procedures, understanding effective methods to deal with verbal outbursts and other forms of resisting authority, correcting student behavior as instructed by Certificated staff, enforcing school and class rules, assisting in the preparation and duplication of learning materials, collecting, assembling and filing instructional materials, performing routine clerical duties and record-keeping such as attendance reports, completing forms, correcting student work, etc.,

operating audio-visual equipment, setting up work areas and preparing bulletin boards and displays, assisting in setting up, monitoring and cleaning up of program facilities, overseeing student activities in the classroom, playground and other school areas, accompanying students to the bus, assisting students, Certificated staff, and/or parents with communication problems resulting from limited knowledge of English, participating in meetings and in-service training programs as assigned, assisting volunteers with activities as assigned, functioning as a role model, assisting students by providing proper examples, emotional support, a friendly attitude and general guidance, and incorporated within one or more of the previously mentioned essential functions of this job description are the following essential physical requirements.
