Patient PopulationThe patient population served can be all patients, including geriatric, adult, adolescent, pediatric, and newborn. This also includes services which affect facility staff, physicians, visitors, vendors and the general public.
Position SummaryWith a positive manner according to Sierra View Medical Center standard of nursing, the R.N. Charge Nurse independently provides holistic, individualized care using the nursing process for patients routinely seen on the unit. Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical competency, nursing judgment, teaching skills, and a commitment to improving the quality of patient care with a positive manner. Is responsible for the coordination of quality patient care through the implementation of the nursing process on a shift basis.
Specific areas of responsibility include, but may not be limited to: serving as a resource person, role model, mentor, ensuring therapies and treatments are given as ordered, immediate oversight of staff assigned to that unit, assisting in staff development, and direct communication with the Clinical Managers and Department Director of the unit as well as Administration as appropriate.
Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act (Gov't Code 3100, 3102). Needs to recognize that they have an affirmative duty and responsibility for reporting perceived misconduct, including actual or potential violations of laws, regulations, policies, procedures, or this organization’s standards/code of conduct.
The employee shall work well under pressure, meet multiple and sometimes competing deadlines; and the incumbent shall at all times demonstrate cooperative behavior with colleagues and supervisors.
Education / Training / ExperienceTo perform this job successfully, an individual should have positive demonstration of leadership skills, effective communication techniques, successful interpersonal relations, and increased acceptance of responsibility. Minimum two (2) years of unit specific clinical experience and/or approval of the Unit Director. A national certification will be identified and the time frame to complete the certification will be approved by the respective Leadership within 90 days of accepting the position.
Must have and maintain Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification or obtain within one (1) year of assignment to department.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence if required.
Ability to calculate figures and medication dosages and solutions calculations.
Ability to use common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to be knowledgeable in basic computer skills.
Licensure / CertificationsMust have and maintain current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of California. Must have and maintain current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS cards or obtain prior to hands on patient care. Must have or be eligible to enroll in MICN and obtain prior to being assigned as a Charge Nurse independently. A national certification will be identified and the time frame to complete the certification will be approved by the respective Leadership within 90 days of accepting the position (applies only if Charge RN is the employee’s primary position).

- Make patient care assignments utilizing Benner's Novice to Expert. Coordinate with the Director or Clinical Manager/House Supervisor in times of high census as patients are triaged to a lower level of care to include discharge.
- Coordinate staffing needs with the Clinical Manager and/or Staffing Coordinator/Nursing Supervisor. Ensure accurate reporting of census and patient acuity for staffing purposes.
- Coordinate breaks and lunches to provide a reasonable ratio of experienced and orienting personnel to provide ongoing patient care.
- Ensure appropriate staff response to all "Code" situations.
- Support achievement of improvement and follow through on actions resulting from QA/QC findings. Encourage participation from coworkers.
