Job Title

CNC Lathe Operator II – 3rd Shift

Overview

A successful CNC Lathe Operator II can safely and efficiently manufacture parts that meet all quality requirements. This hourly, non‑exempt position reports to the Production Supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Work to close tolerances (ie. .0002")
  • Machine metals including steel, stainless steel, and aluminum
  • Inspect parts during production using precision measuring instruments
  • Monitor and maintain machine fluid levels
  • Read process sheets, blueprints, and sketches of parts to determine machining, dimensional specifications, setup, and operating requirements
  • Edit pre‑written programs with supervision when necessary
  • Edit programs for process improvements and troubleshooting
  • Mount work pieces in chuck, faceplate, or fixtures
  • Select and install preset tooling in tool posts, turrets, cutters, and automatic tool change magazine in the sequence specified on the process sheet
  • Observe numerical control displays on the control panel and compare with data on the process sheet to verify dimensional adjustments, feed rates, and speeds of machining cuts
  • Turn dials and switches to override the program and correct machine performance
  • Inspect the first run piece and spot‑check succeeding pieces for conformance to specifications
  • Study job packets and organize materials for the next order during cycles to reduce cycle and setup time
  • Pre‑set tools before positioning them in the lathe
  • Set up and operate another machine tool during machining cycles
  • Set up and operate CNC machines using set‑up sheets and written instructions with minimal supervision
  • Utilize all types of inspection instruments to check work per print without supervision
  • Possess knowledge of various cutting tools and have the ability to determine machine speeds and feeds
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance
  • Cross‑train on other plant machinery as required

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school Diploma or GED
  • At least 3 years of proven CNC Lathe experience
  • Overhead crane experience
  • Sound mechanical aptitude with hands‑on skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience using steady rest
  • Ability to perform machine set‑up (install proper chuck jaws and tooling)
  • Ability to understand the majority of assigned setups
  • Ability to overcome and adapt to problems not specified on the job setup sheet when encountered
  • Proven understanding of equipment and processes in the area of responsibility
  • Ability to read precision measuring equipment
  • Ability to read CNC programs
  • Proven blueprint reading skills, programming knowledge or experience, set‑up capabilities, tooling knowledge, understanding of feeds and speeds, and gearing terminology
  • Proven knowledge of products and fixturing
  • Ability to inspect work and meet quality requirements
  • Ability to perform advanced CNC editing
  • Own basic hand tools at minimum
  • Capability to understand and follow routing information
  • Capability to perform basic layouts at minimum
  • Capability to sharpen tools
  • Ability to effectively train new operators
  • Technical training as required
  • Ability to identify and share process improvement ideas
  • Ability to run single block programs
Physical Requirements
  • Prolonged periods standing
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds at times
