Internal Auditor

Overview

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland is seeking a dedicated, detail-oriented Internal Auditor to support our parishes, schools, and cemeteries across Maine. This role blends strong technical expertise with a collaborative, service-oriented approach, helping local leaders strengthen financial stewardship, ensure compliance, and improve operational effectiveness.

As a trusted partner to pastors, business managers, and diocesan leadership, you will conduct audits, identify risks, and provide guidance that supports both sound financial practices and the broader mission of the Church. This position requires travel throughout Maine and offers the opportunity to make a meaningful, statewide impact.

• Conduct internal audits of parishes, schools, and cemeteries, including quarterly reviews and periodic comprehensive audits
• Evaluate internal controls, financial processes, and compliance with Diocesan policies, GAAP, GAAS, and applicable regulations
• Review financial statements and reports for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to standards
• Perform risk assessments to identify vulnerabilities and recommend improvements to financial and operational practices
• Prepare clear, detailed audit reports with practical, actionable recommendations
• Partner with parish and school leadership to develop and implement corrective action plans, ensuring timely resolution of findings
• Serve as a resource for pastors and business managers, helping them understand audit expectations and strengthen financial practices
• Maintain organized documentation of audit work, findings, and follow-up actions to support accountability and continuous improvement
• Assist with annual diocesan audits and external audit processes
• Collect, track, and review required financial reporting, including ICQs, budgets, and related submissions
• Support preparation of priest benefits financial statements and assist with fixed asset accounting
• Collaborate closely with the CFO and Director of Parish Financial Services to review findings and strengthen processes
• Assist with development and improvement of financial policies and procedures
• Attend diocesan meetings, including cemetery quarterly meetings, as needed

• 5+ years of experience in internal audit, public accounting, or nonprofit finance
• Strong knowledge of GAAP, GAAS, internal controls, and regulatory reporting requirements
• Experience with financial statement analysis, risk assessment, and audit processes
• Familiarity with nonprofit, governmental, or corporate accounting principles
• Proficiency in accounting systems and financial analysis tools
• Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and identify areas for improvement
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain financial concepts to non-financial audiences
• Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and follow through independently
• Service-oriented mindset with a commitment to collaboration and supporting others
• Willingness to travel throughout Maine (up to ~50%)

• Experience working in nonprofit or Church environments
• Familiarity with diocesan accounting practices or parish operations
• Experience with Sage Intacct or similar financial systems
• Practicing Catholic or a demonstrated understanding of and respect for the mission of the Church
