COMPENSATION: $53,000 annual salary, exempt, plus full-time benefits
ORGANIZATIONAL MISSION: The Portland Symphony Orchestra serves our community by enriching lives through music.
JOB SUMMARYThe Education Program Coordinator supports key aspects of the Portland Symphony Orchestra’s education programs, primarily in‑school and school outreach programming. In addition, they provide narration of all PSO Kinder Konzert programs and narration support for Discovery and Youth Concert programs. In collaboration with the Director of Learning and Community Impact, this role works to assess and sustain partnerships and relationships with schools and organizations across Maine and New Hampshire.
The ideal individual will be an experienced, empathetic, motivated individual with the ability to communicate effectively and provide thoughtful and strategic support for the PSO’s existing and future education programs. The role requires strong problem‑solving skills, meticulous organization, excellent public speaking skills, and a passion for music education.
The start date for this position will be on a mutually agreed upon date in July 2026.
QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS- Music Education experience required, classroom teaching experience strongly preferred.
- Excellent verbal communication skills required, public speaking and/or acting/narration experience strongly preferred.
- Strong written communication skills required, experience writing for children’s programming and/or script writing strongly preferred.
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience working directly with a wide range of educational and community organizations.
- Ability to support multiple projects in many stages at once, thriving in a fast‑paced environment.
- Collaborative and effective team player.
- Strong computer literacy in Microsoft Office programs, including but not limited to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint required.
- English fluency required. Fluency in other languages a plus.
- Ability to work varied hours, including mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays (accommodations can be made for holidays according to one’s individual beliefs).
- Smartphone available to support Microsoft office and PSO Phone apps.
- Driver’s license, with a clean driving record and a reliable vehicle. The PSO may require a Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check and background check as a condition of employment. Continued employment is contingent on maintaining a clean and insurable driving record.
- The PSO is a hybrid workplace with days in person and remote. The number of days remote and in person will vary week to week based on event schedules and needs.
- Ability to travel, primarily locally, throughout Maine and New Hampshire is required.
- Work is primarily conducted indoors in office, school, and community settings. Some events may occur outside.
- Sound level varies but is generally moderate to low, unless in a concert or school/community setting with larger audiences/ensembles.
- Ability to reach, push, pull, bend, stoop, or stand as necessary. Will frequently lift instruments and teaching materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Collaborate with the Director of Learning and Community Impact to plan and execute key education programs, including the PSO Explorers Program, Kinder Konzerts, Youth Concerts, Discovery Concerts, exercising progressive judgment in program design, implementation, and evaluation.
- Lead the narration, script writing, and interpretive delivery of all Kinder Konzert programming alongside PSO Kinder Konzert musicians, ensuring content is educational, engaging, and aligned with program goals.
- Provide narration support, when needed, and lead script writing for all Discovery and Youth Concerts alongside the full orchestra.
- Provide administrative support for the PSO Children’s Chorus.
- Provide insightful and strategic feedback to guide the education programs forward, working collaboratively with the Director of Learning and Community Impact to implement programming developments and new initiatives.
