POSITION OVERVIEW:
** PPS is seeking a Long-Term Substitute Math Teacher at Deering High School. Anticipated dates of coverage are:
January 20–June 18, 2026.**
Deering is hiring a long-term substitute math teacherto join our team for the spring semester.
We are a comprehensive public high school serving about 800 students.
As the most diverse school in Maine, we are committed to disrupting inequities in our community by creating a joyful place of learning designed to ensure that every student succeeds.
We are seeking a Math teacher with a demonstrated commitment to equitable teaching practices, a willingness to collaborate closely with others, and the ability to teach to high standards in a heterogeneous classroom.
The course load for this position contains USM Calculus A and Algebra 2.
Experience with Illustrative Mathematics or Amplify Desmos classes are preferred assets.
Experience working with Multilingual Learners is preferred, but not required.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implementing state learning standards and Deering curricula and assessments to give all students access to rigorous and engaging grade-level work
- Working collaboratively with colleagues to improve student outcomes through analysis of student work, adjustments in instruction, and shared teaching strategies
- Managing behavior in a way that aligns to school-wide expectations and protocols, and is clear, consistent, equitable, and student-centered
- Establishing and maintaining a cooperative working relationship with students and families based on trust, understanding and respect for the communities in which they identify
- Knowledge of PPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, PPS policies, and effective instructional practices
- Experience with proficiency-based grading, including developing high-quality assessments aligned to student-friendly rubrics
- Strong understanding of the mechanics of effective pedagogy and experience using differentiation strategies to teach heterogeneous classes
- Demonstrated willingness to collaborate with colleagues, including ELL and Special Ed teachers, to design effective lessons and assessments
- Ability to teach with cultural humility, through questioning deeply held beliefs and viewpoints, and grappling with conflicting perspectives
- Willingness and ability to use technology to teach and communicate with students and families
- Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND
EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree in the applicable field of education from an accredited college or university
- Masters degree preferred
- Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info )
- Maine State Teacher Certificate with 300 Endorsement (Mathematics, 7-12)(more info )
