Long-Term Substitute, 5th Grade (Fall 2026) – Lyseth Elementary School
Position OverviewUnder the direction of the school principal, plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. Creates an atmosphere conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development to ensure success for every student. Supervises students in various school-related settings, monitors and evaluates outcomes, and communicates with students, parents, staff, and the community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet all students’ needs.
Maintains records and follows required procedures. Uses equipment, materials, and facilities responsibly.
This position is expected to be available from August 31 to December 22, 2026.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities- Knowledge of techniques for integrating curriculum and effective instructional practices
- Understanding of the teaching/learning process
- Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education
- Ability to infuse technology into the curriculum
- Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office staff, students, parents, and the community
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
- Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university
- Maine State Teacher Certificate with one of the following:
- Endorsement 020 (General Elementary, K-6 or K-8)
At Harrison Lyseth Elementary in Portland, ME, we collaborate to ensure all students feel a strong sense of belonging and are engaged in grade-level learning every day. Special Education teachers provide co‑teaching support and small group instruction using structured literacy approaches, including Orton‑Gillingham through IMSE, with ongoing coaching and support.
We are committed to explicit, systematic literacy instruction in K–2 and use EL Education curriculum across K–5, alongside Illustrative Mathematics, to promote inquiry and engagement. Data‑driven instruction, professional collaboration, and coaching are central to our practice, supported by literacy and math coaches and a Special Education Coordinator.
