POSITION OVERVIEW:
Portland Public Schools seeks a long-term substitute teacher for a 2nd‑grade class at Talbot Community School for the remainder of the 2025‑2026 school year (approx. dates of coverage: April 27 – June 22). Under the direction of the school principal, the substitute plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for students. The role provides an atmosphere conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development, supervises students in various settings, monitors and evaluates outcomes, communicates with students, parents, staff, and community, develops and modifies instructional plans and materials, maintains records, follows procedures, and monitors use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of PPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, PPS policies, and effective instructional practices
- Understanding of the teaching/learning process
- Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education
- Ability to infuse technology into curriculum
- Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office, school‑based staff, students, parents, and community
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills
- Bachelor’s degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university
- Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info)
- Maine State Teacher Certification with one of the following endorsements (more info):
- General Elementary, K-6 or K-8 (020)
- Early Elementary, PK-3 (029)
- Assignment: Temporary (April 27 – June 22)
- Schedule: Full time, 1.0 FTE
- Wage: $36.43 / hour (certification required for this rate)
