Job Description Position Title

Special Education Coordinator – Moore Middle School

Position Overview

Under the supervision of the building Principal, the Special Education (SE) Coordinator supports the school's special education team in ensuring that all students requiring special education and related services receive appropriate instruction, programming, and support. The role supports the district's strategic plan to improve academic and social‑emotional outcomes for students with disabilities and promote equity. The Coordinator organizes and monitors all SE programs, provides direct support to teachers and instructional technologists, and serves as the school's LEA representative.

Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Coordination
    • Coordinate the SE team, facilitating regular meetings and check‑ins.
    • Serve as point person for SE matters on the school leadership team.
    • Collaborate on scheduling to ensure all required SE services are delivered.
    • Attend monthly SE Coordinator meetings to align with district practices.
  • IEP Management and Compliance
    • Coordinate scheduling of all IEP meetings.
    • Act as LEA representative for all IEP meetings.
    • Monitor IEP processes and paperwork to ensure compliance with laws, policies, and timelines.
    • Review IEPs and other SE documents before finalization, including initial referrals.
  • Student Case Management and Support
    • Manage transition processes for students with IEPs across grade spans.
    • Serve as case manager for students in private school placements, as assigned.
    • Submit requests for district‑level resources (transportation, 1:1 support, specialized programs).
    • Collaborate with SE case managers to ensure achievement testing and observations are completed appropriately.
    • Support implementation of standardized testing accommodations and alternate assessments.
    • Consult with the RTI/MTSS team to provide SE expertise.
    • Assist teachers in understanding each child’s disability and sharing accommodations with all staff.
  • Professional Development and Support for Classroom Educators
    • Deliver SE professional development to SE staff, collaborating with network directors.
    • Consult general and specialist teachers on evidence‑based instructional strategies for students with IEPs.
    • Manage SE staffing, reassigning staff to cover absences and deadlines.
    • Serve as mentor for new SE teachers.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or relevant district leaders.

Education, Training, and Experience
  • At least three years leading IEP meetings and/or acting as an LEA representative.
  • Preferred: At least three years of special education teaching experience.
  • Preferred: Maine State Teaching Certificate with Endorsement 286 and/or experience working with students with significant special education needs.
  • Preferred: Advanced degree in special education or related field.
Credential Requirements
  • One of the following Maine State certifications:
    • Teacher Certificate with 282 Endorsement (Teacher of Students with Disabilities, K‑8)
    • Administrate Certificate 030 (Administrator of Special Education)
    • Administrator Certificate 035 (Assistant Administrator of Special Education)
    • Certificate 079 (Special Education Consultant)
  • Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization.
    If you already have an active teacher certification, you do not need a separate CHRC.
Employment Details
  • Calendar: 193 days (standard school year + 10 days)
  • Schedule: Full Time (1.0 FTE)
  • Assignment: Permanent
  • Overtime: Not eligible for overtime
  • Contract: Union contract being negotiated; references prior union CBA until finalized.
  • Salary: Salary schedule under negotiation, based on existing CBA until finalized.
  • Benefits: Eligible for benefits as outlined in district policy.
  • Reports to: School Principal
