Pre‑K ESOL Teacher – Reiche Community School and Partner Sites
Position OverviewPortland Public Schools seeks a skilled ESOL Teacher to join the Pre‑K team at Reiche Community School and our partner sites:
Catherine Morrill and Youth and Family Outreach. Working across four classrooms, the teacher will support a caseload of about 25 multilingual Pre‑K students. ESOL teachers in Portland Public Schools are expected to:
- Provide rigorous and appropriate English language instruction aligned with WIDA English Language Proficiency & Standards and the Common Core to meet grade‑level expectations for ML/DLL students, including newcomers.
- Collaborate with general‑education teachers to enhance English acquisition in all language domains necessary for participation and progress in content classes.
- Provide ongoing staff development on language acquisition, acculturation, sheltered instruction, and effective practices for teaching multilingual learners.
- Use school and student‑level data to inform instruction and programming supports for ML/DLL students.
- Be culturally responsive and effective communicators with students, parents, and staff.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relation skills.
- Understanding of the teaching/learning process for multilingual students.
- Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
- Ability to use student data and language proficiency assessment results to inform classroom instruction and programming for multilingual students.
- Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
- Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited college or university.
- Maine State Teacher certification with 660 endorsement.
- Maine State CHRC authorization (if you already have an active teacher certification, you do not need a separate CHRC as this clearance is tied to your teacher certification).
- Grade‑level appropriate teacher certification:
Pre‑K Teacher (081), Teacher of Students with Disabilities (282, 0‑5), General Elementary Teacher (020, K‑5). - Fluency in a language other than English.
