POSITION OVERVIEW:

Portland Public Schools has an Early Literacy Ed Tech III opening at Talbot Community School. Under the direction of the Principal, the Early Literacy Ed Tech III assists teachers by performing a variety of tasks that promote student learning and well-being, with a particular focus on literacy. Duties involve working with students individually and in small groups to support repeated practice, reinforce instruction, assess performance, and motivate learning as well as assisting with classroom management and performing clerical / non-instructional work.

Multilingual communication skills are a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as rules, curriculum materials, and directions from academic assessments
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence to families
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of students, parents, or employees
  • Ability to calculate accurately basic math, as well as draw and interpret bar graphs
  • Ability to interact with staff, students, parents, and others in an open, friendly, business-like manner
  • Ability to take initiative within a set of guidelines and expectations
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND

EXPERIENCE:
  • Approval as an Educational Technician III by the Maine Department of Education; in the alternative, Maine provisional or professional teacher certification
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a college degree that includes nine credit hours related to an education field such as literacy, behavior management or classroom strategies, and to candidates who have at least one year of experience working with students in structured situations
  • Preference will also be given to candidates who speak more languages than English
CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Maine State Educational Technician III (023) authorization ( more info )
  • if you already have an active Ed Tech certification, you do not need a separate CHRC as this clearance is tied to your Ed Tech certification
