Job Description
TITLE: 8th Grade Math Teacher - King Middle School
POSITION OVERVIEW: Portland Public Schools seeks a skilled Math Teacher to join the staff at King Middle School. We are looking specifically for educators with a demonstrated commitment to equitable teaching practices, a willingness to collaborate closely with others, and the ability to teach to high standards in a heterogeneous classroom. Experience with Illustrative Mathematics and working with Multilingual Learners are preferred assets.
Under the direction of the school Principal, the Math Teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences. Provides an atmosphere conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development, and ensures success for every student. Supervises students, monitors and evaluates outcomes, communicates with students, parents, staff, and community. Develops, selects, and modifies instructional plans and materials. Maintains records and follows procedures. Monitors proper use of equipment, materials, and facilities.
ESSENTIALRESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement state learning standards, school curricula, and assessments to give all students access to rigorous grade‑level work.
- Collaborate with colleagues to improve student outcomes through analysis of work, instructional adjustments, and shared strategies.
- Manage classroom behavior in alignment with school‑wide expectations and protocols; clear, consistent, equitable, student‑centered.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students and families, grounded in trust, understanding, and respect.
- Knowledge of PPS curriculum, instructional techniques, policies, and effective practices.
- Experience with proficiency‑based grading, developing high‑quality assessments aligned to student‑friendly rubrics.
- Strong understanding of effective pedagogy and differentiation strategies for heterogeneous classes.
- Willingness to collaborate with colleagues including ELL and Special Ed teachers.
- Ability to teach with cultural humility, questioning beliefs and navigating conflicting perspectives.
- Proficiency in using technology to teach and communicate with students and families.
- Effective collaboration with administrators, staff, parents, and community.
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field from an accredited institution.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- ESOL experience or 660 endorsement preferred.
- Maine State Teacher Certificate with 300 endorsement (Math, 5‑8 or 6‑12).
- Maine State CHRC authorization (no separate CHRC needed if active teacher certification is held).
- Schedule: School Year, Full Time (1.0 FTE)
- Assignment: Permanent
- Reports to: School Principal
- Salary: Based on education and experience, as outlined in the CBA.
