8th Grade Math Teacher – King Middle School
Position Overview:
Portland Public Schools seeks a skilled Math Teacher to join the teaching staff at King Middle School. We are looking specifically for educators with a demonstrated commitment to equitable teaching practices, a willingness to collaborate closely with others, and the ability to teach to high standards in a heterogeneous classroom. Experience with Illustrative Mathematics and working with Multilingual Learners are preferred assets.
Under the direction of the school Principal, the Math Teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students. The role includes creating an atmosphere conducive to intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development, supervising students in various settings, monitoring and evaluating outcomes, communicating with students, parents, staff, and community, and developing instructional plans and materials for all students. Records are maintained and procedures followed.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Implement state learning standards and school curricula and assessments to provide all students with rigorous and engaging grade-level work.
- Collaborate with colleagues to improve student outcomes through analysis of student work, adjustments in instruction, and shared teaching strategies.
- Manage behavior aligned to school-wide expectations and protocols that are clear, consistent, equitable, and student-centered.
- Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with students and families based on trust and respect.
- Knowledge of PPS curriculum, integration techniques, and effective instructional practices.
- Experience with proficiency-based grading and developing assessments aligned to student-friendly rubrics.
- Strong understanding of pedagogy mechanics and use of differentiation strategies for heterogeneous classes.
- Willingness to collaborate with ELL and Special Ed teachers to design effective lessons and assessments.
- Ability to teach with cultural humility and address diverse perspectives.
- Willingness to use technology to teach and communicate.
- Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, and community stakeholders.
- Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field from an accredited institution.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- ESOL experience or 660 Endorsement preferred.
- Maine State Teacher Certificate with 300 Endorsement (Math, 5‑8 or 6‑12).
- Maine State CHRC authorization (if you already have an active teacher certification, you do not need a separate CHRC as this clearance is tied to your teacher certification).
