Job Summary

Responsible for substation designs for major capital projects in Maine and New York, including input into standards and training needs. The electric delivery system in Maine contains approximately 2,600 miles of transmission lines and 317 substations. In New York, approximately 5,600 miles of transmission lines and 621 substations. Position reports to the Substation Projects Coordinator but works day‑to‑day in a cross‑functional project team and supports project needs as dictated by the project manager.

Key Responsibilities
  • Capital project engineering performance including all phases such as scoping and budgeting, conceptual engineering, contract management and design, engineering design, construction, and closeout.
  • Perform standard and complex electrical engineering analyses, designs, and calculations using standard methodology and principles.
  • Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve problems or improve processes/services.
  • Lead and create new conceptual designs and oversee the work of external detailed designers.
  • Solve unique and complex electrical engineering problems.
  • Analyze possible solutions and assess each using standard procedures related to lines and power engineering.
  • Ensure all engineering designs meet applicable company, local, state, and national codes and standards.
  • Support technical requests from current and proposed customers.
  • Provide technical leadership in complex projects with wide impact on the department.
  • Mentor, develop, and support team in technical skills.
  • Collaborate across departments, liaise with contractors on company policy, standards, and best practices.
  • Work independently with little supervision.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 7+ years minimum relevant experience.
  • Strong theoretical engineering knowledge in planning, operations, and engineering design.
  • Practical engineering experience in construction, field, and standardization.
  • Ability to perform economic analyses of engineering alternatives and develop business cases.
  • Proficiency in engineering documentation, review, and approval.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal regulatory standards and requirements.
  • Excellent diagnostic and problem‑solving skills.
  • Proven ability to lead and manage projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong management and leadership skills, ability to drive change and adoption of new technologies.
  • General contract, commercial and regulatory awareness.
  • Track record of effective stakeholder and customer service engagement and management.
  • Ability to communicate and present information effectively at all levels.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities using sound engineering and financial judgment.
  • Awareness and understanding of key business drivers.
Technical & Operational Experience
  • Construction and maintenance standards in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Engineering standards and specifications up to 345 kV.
Unique Technical Skills
  • Substation grounding – Expert
  • Thermal ratings – Expert/Competent
  • Lightning analysis – Expert/Competent
  • Transient analysis – Expert/Competent
  • Insulation coordination – Expert/Competent
  • Substation equipment commissioning – Expert/Competent

Note: 3 of the unique technical skills listed above must be at the Expert level.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineering License.
