Position: 2026 Summer Internship H.B. Fleming

Description

H.B. Fleming is a design-build geotechnical contractor performing excavation support, pile driving, large diameter drilling, ground improvement, and micropiles. The company currently employs approximately 90 full-time employees in South Portland, ME. We perform a range of work, including heavy civil, water/wastewater treatment, commercial, and residential projects, in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts. This opportunity will provide invaluable exposure to the fundamentals of civil engineering, surveying and layout, and construction fundamentals.

Job Duties
  • Assist full-time engineers and project managers with coordinating work
  • Perform construction layout and collect as-built information using a robotic total station
  • Work with field crews to apply classroom knowledge and develop an understanding of how geotechnical work is performed
  • Participate in the development of geotechnical and structural design packages
  • Track quantities and production of field crews
  • Inspect work and verify conformance with plans and specifications
Experience and Skills
  • Pursuing a degree in civil engineering, construction engineering technology, surveying engineering technology, or a related field
  • Ability to solve problems and work independently
  • Surveying using a total station
  • AutoCAD, Carlson Survey, GRLWEAP, and PTC Mathcad experience is a plus
  • OSHA 10, OSHA 30, HAZWOPER, or other safety certifications are a plus

The job will require travel throughout Northern New England to support project sites. Applicants must have reliable transportation. Typical travel assignments last between 1 and 5 days.
