JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position is within Maine Revenue Services' Income/Estate Tax Division-Business Audit Unit. The Unit is responsible for auditing filed business income tax returns and detecting business income tax non-filers. Audits may be conducted at the Taxpayer's corporate headquarters or remotely by correspondence. Audits conducted at a Taxpayer's corporate headquarters may require air travel and overtime.
Revenue agents are required to perform audits and conduct non-filer investigations within the bounds of federal and state law and Maine Revenue Services' policies. All work must be performed in a timely manner in accordance with confidentiality laws, organizational procedures, and strict statutory deadlines.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review filed corporate income tax returns to determine compliance with Maine tax laws;
- Initiate corporate income tax audits with taxpayers and/or taxpayer representatives;
- Analyze complex tax records to establish audit findings;
- Determine tax liability in accordance with Maine statute;
- Compile audit findings in written form;
- Convey audit findings verbally to taxpayers and/or taxpayer representatives;
- Conduct non-filer investigations to ensure compliance with Maine tax laws;
- Research, analyze and form conclusions on compliance issues regarding non-filer activity;
- Process Voluntary Disclosure Agreement requests.

- Knowledge of accounting principles and procedures;
- Knowledge of auditing principles and procedures;
- Knowledge of business practices and principles;
- Knowledge of state and federal tax laws;
- Knowledge of the judicial processes used in tax enforcement;
- Ability to analyze and interpret data, statute, policy, and procedures;
- Ability to interface with taxpayers and taxpayer representatives in a professional manner;
- Ability to communicate controversial matters in a concise, courteous manner;
- Exemplary time management and organizational skills;
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Post-secondary education and/or training in business administration, accounting, mathematics, economics, information technology, finance, property appraisal, auditing, or taxes with experience demonstrating the ability to use independent judgment, initiative, and discretion to make decisions on complex matters.
Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills or experience:
- Income tax preparation
- Accounting degree or coursework
- Taxation coursework
- Advanced communication skills
- Auditing financial records or tax filings
