Neuro ICU at Maine Medical Center
Where Critical Thinking Meets Compassionate Care
Welcome to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Maine Medical Center—a specialized 12-bed unit dedicated to the care of patients with complex and life‑threatening neurological and neurosurgical conditions. As part of a Comprehensive Stroke Center and Magnet hospital, our team is recognized for delivering cutting‑edge, high‑acuity care with precision, teamwork, and heart.
Who We Care For- Acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, including post‑thrombectomy care
- Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
- Status epilepticus and other complex seizure disorders
- Post‑cardiac arrest patients requiring target temperature management or EVD/ICP PbO2 management
- Severe neuromuscular conditions (e.g., myasthenic or Guillain‑Barre crises)
- Neurosurgical patients, including those undergoing:
- Brain tumor resections
- Craniotomies
- External ventricular drain (EVD) placement and management
- Patients requiring advanced neurological monitoring such as continuous EEG, pupillometry, PbO2 monitoring
The acuity of our patients requires nurses to be vigilant, confident in neuro assessments, and quick to act. Many of our patients require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive support, and frequent neuro exams to identify subtle but critical changes.
The CultureThe Neuro ICU is grounded in a culture of collaboration, trust, and shared purpose. We believe in:
- Supporting one another during tough shifts and emotionally challenging cases
- Celebrating wins—both big and small—because every step toward recovery matters
- Humor as a coping tool (you'll hear laughter here even on the hardest days)
- Open communication with leadership and a strong emphasis on professional development
We work as an interdisciplinary team which values each other's input and bedside insight. The team includes:
- Neurointensivists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons
- Advanced practice providers
- Physical, occupational, and speech therapists
- Social work and care management professionals
- Certified nursing assistants and unit aides
- Respiratory therapists and hemodynamic monitoring specialists
- An engaged and present leadership team
- We offer structured preceptorship and mentoring to support new team members
- Nurses are involved in evidence‑based practice, quality improvement, and hospital‑wide initiatives
- We're proud to be the beta site for emerging technology, like nurse‑applied EEG systems
- Our nurses grow into leaders, educators, charge nurses, and clinical experts through internal advancement and certification support
This is the unit for nurses who want to sharpen their skills, challenge themselves, and provide care that changes lives. If you thrive in a fast‑paced, supportive environment with a close‑knit team—the Neuro ICU is where you belong.
