Welcome to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Maine Medical Center-a specialized 12-bed unit dedicated to the care of patients with complex and life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical conditions. As part of a Comprehensive Stroke Center and Magnet hospital, our team is recognized for delivering cutting-edge, high-acuity care with precision, teamwork, and heart.
Who We Care For
We specialize in the management of patients with:
- Acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, including post-thrombectomy care
- Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
- Status epilepticus and other complex seizure disorders
- Post-cardiac arrest patients requiring target temperature management or EVD/ICP PbO2 management
- Severe neuromuscular conditions (e.g., myasthenic or Guillain-Barré crises)
- Neurosurgical patients, including those undergoing:
- Brain tumor resections
- Craniotomies
- External ventricular drain (EVD) placement and management
- Patients requiring advanced neurological monitoring such as continuous EEG, pupillometry, PbO2 monitoring
- Supporting one another during tough shifts and emotionally challenging cases
- Celebrating wins-both big and small-because every step toward recovery matters
- Humor as a coping tool (you'll hear laughter here even on the hardest days)
