Welcome to the Neuro Intensive Care Unit at Maine Medical Center-a specialized 12-bed unit dedicated to the care of patients with complex and life-threatening neurological and neurosurgical conditions. As part of a Comprehensive Stroke Center and Magnet hospital, our team is recognized for delivering cutting-edge, high-acuity care with precision, teamwork, and heart.

Who We Care For

We specialize in the management of patients with:

• Acute ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, including post-thrombectomy care
• Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage
• Status epilepticus and other complex seizure disorders
• Post-cardiac arrest patients requiring target temperature management or EVD/ICP PbO2 management
• Severe neuromuscular conditions (e.g., myasthenic or Guillain-Barré crises)
• Neurosurgical patients, including those undergoing:
• Brain tumor resections
• Craniotomies
• External ventricular drain (EVD) placement and management
• Patients requiring advanced neurological monitoring such as continuous EEG, pupillometry, PbO2 monitoring
The acuity of our patients requires nurses to be vigilant, confident in neuro assessments, and quick to act. Many of our patients require mechanical ventilation, vasoactive support, and frequent neuro exams to identify subtle but critical changes.
