About The Team/Role

We are seeking a seasoned Sr. Manager of Engineering in the WEX OTR Engineering organization. This role will lead the engineering team for our OTR APIs product that caters to fleet management and OTR payments solutions for our large customers and partners. The OTR APIs development team spans across the USA and Brazil. The OTR systems provide SaaS and API solutions to various customers in North America.

WEX OTR products enable credit issuance to fleet companies and their employees, and owner‑operator truckers in the form of WEX Credit Cards, which can be used at fueling stations and select other merchants. At WEX, we provide fleet managers and operators with the ability to configure spend controls that restrict fleet members to use their card only at preconfigured merchants and for configured product families.

How

You’ll Make An Impact
  • Develop, drive, and execute a long‑term vision and strategy for the WEX OTR APIs for vehicle management and OTR payments (card issuance, controls, lifecycle, transactions).
  • Be a hands‑on technical leader, and own and implement system designs of the API platform, making high‑judgment design calls such as choosing between RESTful APIs and gRPC APIs depending on the use case.
  • Develop and track progress of the OTR APIs architectural roadmap, aligning with business objectives and industry best practices. Maintain a granular resource map of developers and their month‑over‑month work streams.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, empowerment, and continuous learning.
  • Continuously challenge the status quo and implement mechanisms to reduce time‑to‑market using evolving engineering approaches.
  • Collaborate with other OTR engineering teams to reuse development practices and components to reduce duplication.
  • Drive cross‑team engineering projects as a single‑threaded owner (STO).
  • Hire, lead, manage, retain, and grow high‑performance software engineers using active career‑growth planning.
  • Work closely with product and commercial partners to drive, prioritize, and work backwards from the customer requirements to develop a modern API suite.
  • Drive effective monthly and weekly mechanisms to plan, execute, and audit work streams.
  • Partner with product and commercial (sales) leads to maintain a well‑thought‑out roadmap, and create clear and inter‑dependent OKRs with these partners.
  • Establish a robust and clear engineering roadmap to maintain clarity and motivation for the engineering team. Maintain career growth plans and provide monthly and quarterly feedback for individuals’ continual progress.
  • Establish measurement of metrics‑driven dev productivity across the OTR APIs team.
  • Comfortably present, influence, and communicate to the senior leadership team. Provide regular updates and insights to your manager (Director) on the challenges and opportunities within the OTR domain.
Experience You'll Bring
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science or Software Engineering.
  • 6 years of experience in software engineering with 2 years of engineering management experience.
  • Expertise in developing large‑scale distributed systems and proven experience in testing and validating solutions for accuracy and performance.
  • Ability to automate generating scaffolding code, unit tests, and integration tests using past execution data and generative AI.
  • Strong understanding of security and compliance requirements in cloud and data environments.
  • Excellent leadership, team‑building, and dynamic decision‑making skills.
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and thrive in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building high‑performance distributed systems at internet‑scale companies.
  • Experience building credit card products, or experience developing solutions in a scheme/network.
  • Experience working on closed‑loop card systems.
