General Description

A Tri-Axle Dump Truck Driver is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that, for the majority of the time, is responsible for the safe operation of a CMV Dump Truck to transport materials to/from identified pick‑up and drop‑off locations.

Key Duties
  • Hold a valid Class “B” CDL license and personal driving record within company MVR policy.
  • Maintain an approved medical examiner’s certificate (FMCSR part 391.41) for the duration of employment and as required for Class “A/B” CDL license holders.
  • Operate CMV Dump Truck safely and efficiently on public and private roadways.
  • Familiarity with applicable FMCSA and USDOT safety and operation regulations.
  • Visually assess material in dump and secure/reposition/adjust contents to ensure a secured load for safe transport.
  • Visually and physically inspect mechanical, safety and operational components for defects, including completing Pre/Post‑trip Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports.
  • Interpret vehicle indicators for fluid levels (oil, water, fuel) during operation.
  • Perform pre‑shift safety checks of oil, water, fuel levels and inspect for leaks and damage before operation.
  • Notify supervisor if vehicle requires repair or if any issue is identified.
  • Communicate verbally with Dispatch and/or Supervisor regularly.
  • Follow dispatched routing/maps for pickup and/or delivery of materials.
  • Work day or night shifts as required.
  • Perform incidental work items and duties within other crafts.
Education and Experience

This position typically requires non‑entry level experience as a Roll‑off Driver.

  • High school diploma or GED is preferred.
  • Minimum of one year of Dump Truck or other CMV driving experience.
Physical Demands
  • Frequent sitting and driving a Commercial Motor Vehicle; use hands, arms, legs and feet to maneuver and control steering wheel, turn signals, horn, foot pedals and other controls.
  • Periodic standing, walking on hard level surfaces, and performing visual assessments of material loads, drop‑off areas and vehicle inspections.
  • Step up/down approximately 2’ using access steps and three points of contact to access the cab.
  • Operate tarp control (electric or manual) using hands.
  • Use vision for close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception and adjust focus as required.
  • Hear, understand, and distinguish speech and other sounds (e.g., equipment alarms, supervisor instructions).
  • Occasional lifting or pushing/pulling up to 25 lbs (e.g., opening dump truck hood and tail gate).
Work Environment
  • Work performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Exposure to high levels of noise, grease, and dust typical of construction projects.
  • Regular work near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Exposure to substances such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel, and asphalt.

  • Assess work environment for hazards and ensure training is adequate.
  • Use proper personal protective equipment and tools.
  • Speak up when seeing an unsafe act.
  • Identify and report near‑miss incidents.
  • Ask for help when needed to perform tasks safely.
  • Seek safer ways to perform work and communicate them.
