Accounting Manager - NONPROFIT (Hybrid in Portland, OR)

Position Overview: Relay Resources is seeking an experienced and collaborative Accounting Manager to oversee general ledger activities, period-end closings, financial reporting, and the AP/AR functions across its growing portfolio, including affordable housing and property management subsidiaries. Reporting to the Assistant Controller, this role plays a key part in driving technical accounting excellence, process improvements, and team development. With Relay in the midst of a Net Suite implementation and fiscal year-end close, this is a pivotal time to join a high-performing Finance and Accounting team led by a long-tenured Controller and supported by strong leadership.
The ideal candidate brings ERP experience (Net Suite preferred), housing-specific accounting knowledge (Yardi, HUD, LIHTC, or Section
8), and thrives in environments undergoing transformation and growth. As Relay scales from $60M to $100M+, this is a unique opportunity to influence change, support cross-functional teams, and help shape a modern, communicative, and solutions-oriented finance culture.
- Accounting Oversight & Close (25%):
Manage monthly, quarterly, and year-end close activities, including journal entries, reconciliations, and GAAP compliance. Maintain schedules for key accounts such as prepaids and accruals. - Accounts Payable & Receivable (20%):
Oversee daily A/P and A/R operations. Guide staff on vendor payments, billing, collections, and ensure adherence to internal controls and process improvements. - Fixed Assets & Lease Accounting (15%):
Manage capitalization, depreciation, and disposals. Maintain the fixed asset subledger and ensure lease accounting aligns with ASC 842 standards. - Financial Reporting & Analysis (10%):
Support internal reporting, variance analysis, and dashboard creation. Assist with consolidated financials and ad-hoc reporting in partnership with the Assistant Controller. - Affordable Housing & Property Management (10%):
Lead property-level accounting and regulatory reporting for HUD, LIHTC, and Section 8 programs. Utilize Yardi for accurate tracking and compliance. - Audit & Compliance (10%):
Support annual audits and Form 990 preparation. Compile audit schedules and respond to auditor inquiries, ensuring regulatory compliance. - Process Improvement & Team Support (10%):
Collaborate on accounting process enhancements and Net Suite optimization. Provide team coaching, cross-functional support, and contribute to a collaborative culture.
Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 6+ years of accounting experience, ideally in nonprofit, affordable housing, or property management.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and internal reporting processes.
- ERP proficiency;
Net Suite experience highly preferred. - Skilled in Excel (pivot tables, formulas, data analysis).
- Excellent communicator with strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
- Able to manage competing priorities and work both independently and within a team environment.
- CPA license or active progress toward certification.
- Affordable housing accounting experience (HUD, LIHTC, Section
8). - Proficiency with Yardi for property and tenant accounting.
- Familiarity with nonprofit financial reporting and audit preparation.
- Experience with intercompany reconciliations and consolidated reporting.
- Strong grasp of GAAP and financial accounting principles.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communicator, able to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Proven ability to mentor junior staff and support team development.
- Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.

Portland, OR (Hybrid) - Salary: $110,000 - $120,000 per year, DOE.
