Payroll Tax Accountant
The payroll tax accountant is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting payroll processes and procedures to ensure compliance with company policies and government regulations. The role includes preparing all required federal, state, and local tax filings, researching and monitoring payroll compliance issues, planning and implementing tax updates to the payroll system, and maintaining and upgrading the payroll tax filing system.
Responsibilities- Oversee the maintenance of payroll tax records, the payment of payroll tax deposits, and the preparation of all required federal, state, and local tax filings and forms.
- Serve as the company contact with payroll tax agencies to resolve discrepancies and issues.
- Research and interpret payroll accounting and tax issues to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and advise payroll and human resources staff on payroll and tax requirements.
- Support the quarterly Sarbanes‑Oxley review of the payroll controls and oversee the annual review of the payroll compliance plan.
- Oversee and monitor the reconciliation of payroll‑related balance sheet accounts.
- Develop the annual payroll taxes budget.
- Serve as a liaison to the treasury, accounting, and corporate tax departments for matters related to payroll accounting and taxes.
- Provide guidance related to payroll accounting and tax issues to the payroll analyst and payroll specialists.
- Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or business, or equivalent related work experience.
- Minimum of six years of related work experience, including at least four years in payroll tax accounting.
- Certified Public Accountant designation preferred, but not required.
- Knowledge of payroll tax regulations and procedures and experience with payroll tax filings.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles.
- Effective analytical, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills with the ability to identify key causes and workable solutions.
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer software to extract and analyze information.
- Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
