Job Summary and Responsibilities:

The Senior Accountant supports the Assistant Controller in managing and overseeing a broad range of accounting functions to ensure the accuracy, integrity, and compliance of the organization's financial records. This role is responsible for maintaining day-to-day financial transactions, preparing and analyzing financial reports, assisting with month-end and year-end closing processes, and ensuring compliance with applicable federal, state, and organizational regulations.

The Senior Accountant plays a key role in strengthening internal controls, supporting audits, reconciling accounts, and identifying opportunities to improve accounting processes and financial reporting. The position requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively across departments to support the organization's financial goals.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Accounting Responsibilities Percentage of Time: 65%
  • Maintaining the organization's general ledger, including preparing monthly reconciliations for balance sheet and expense accounts to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Review monthly reconciliations for multiple investment pools and prepare journal entries to allocate investment returns across applicable funds.
  • Prepare specialized financial reports and assist with ad hoc financial analyses, process improvement initiatives, and special projects to support organizational objectives
  • Provide cross-functional support to Finance team members, ensuring continuity of operations and timely completion of departmental responsibilities.
  • Provide backup support for recording non-cash gifts and associated sales in the general ledger.
  • Provide back up support for ACH verification process.
  • Audit Percentage of Time: 15%
  • Prepare selected audit work papers in collaboration with the Assistant Controller, ensuring the timely and accurate preparation of OCF draft annual financial statements.
  • Assist the Assistant Controller in documenting accounting processes through written procedures and scripts, maintaining updates as needed, and initiating process improvement projects to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Support the Assistant Controller in coordinating financial database training, troubleshooting database issues, and prioritizing system enhancements to improve functionality and user experience.
  • Compliance and Special Projects Percentage of Time: 20%
  • Prepare federal and state quarterly estimated tax payments and related tax filings for OCF and its supporting organizations.
  • Draft annual federal and state tax returns for OCF and its supporting organizations, including all related tax filings and compliance requirements.
  • Manage a broad range of compliance activities while staying current on accounting, tax, and regulatory issues impacting nonprofits and community foundations.
  • Assist in the review of trust financial statements and tax returns.
  • Stay informed of accounting and tax issues related to nonprofits and community foundations.
