Public Works Inspector

Full‑time position located at 810 N Graham St, Portland, OR 97227. Work schedule Mon‑Fri 7am‑3:30pm (alternate schedule may be available). Union representation: AFSCME 189 – City Wide.

Responsibilities
  • Review engineering plans, specifications and contract documents for civil construction projects and provide recommendations during pre‑construction.
  • Conduct ADA curb ramp inspections, including concrete, conditional and final inspections, and prepare daily reports.
  • Inspect public works projects, ensuring contractor, personnel and public safety; verify quantities and types of materials; prepare progress reports.
  • Inspect underground utility installations for conformity to plans.
  • Provide final walk‑through and measurement of work performed, create payment documents and monitor material testing.
  • Inspect permits (street opening, sidewalk and driveway, sewer connection and repair, encroachment).
  • Respond to right‑of‑way complaints.
  • Maintain contact with engineers, contractors, developers and public members.
  • If assigned to sidewalk inspection, assess hazards, prepare legal affidavits using Microsoft Visio, and interact with property owners and permit tees.
Qualifications
  • Experience with construction equipment and practices.
  • Experience with construction related information (progress, dimensions, quantities, instructions).
  • Experience reading technical documents (survey notes, drawings, plans, specifications, codes, contracts, manuals, reports).
  • Experience applying safety practices on construction sites.
  • Experience using math calculations for estimating construction progress.
  • Experience establishing effective working relationships and communicating technical information to non‑technical individuals.
  • Valid state driver’s license with acceptable record at time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
  • ODOT Certified General Construction Inspector.
