Interim Leadership RoleKGW, the TEGNA‑owned NBC affiliate in Portland OR, is searching for a motivated, people‑oriented leader to lead an interim newsroom role. The assignment provides strong editorial and operational leadership during a transitional period and is ideal for an experienced newsroom leader who is hands‑on, collaborative, and comfortable leading from the middle of the action.
Responsibilities- Work closely with producers, reporters, anchors, and photographers on compelling, impact‑driven original storytelling and daily news coverage.
- Review and approve scripts to ensure accuracy, clarity, tone, and strong storytelling.
- Provide hands‑on writing assistance and coaching to producers and reporters, particularly on complex or high‑impact stories.
- Oversee production of newscasts.
- Make split‑second decisions to lead the news team during breaking news and severe weather events.
- Work with executive producers to ensure a multi‑platform content approach at every stage of the news‑gathering process.
- Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field, and prior newsroom leadership experience.
- 5‑7 years of content experience, including generation of original content.
- Strong journalistic judgment with an emphasis on accurate, fair, and compelling local content, along with community engagement.
- Demonstrated experience editing, approving, and coaching scripts and written content.
- Excellent people‑management skills.
- Strong communication and conflict‑management skills.
- Strong organizational skills in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment.
