Overview

Are you looking for a part-time job that is flexible and fun? Portland Parks & Recreation is hiring at Community Centers across Portland. This application is not for summer day camp jobs. Summer job applications will become available in March.

Summary

Portland Parks & Recreation is hiring part-time employees for community centers around Portland. These jobs help run programs like school break camps, sports, art, and after-school activities. We are looking for people who can work as Counselors, Attendants, Customer Service Representatives, and Instructors. This is a talent pool and is collecting a list of interested applicants. When a job opens, we will review applications to decide who to invite for an interview.

Job

Type, Schedule, and Location
  • Job Type: Casual, Part-time. Classified by the City of Portland as either Recreation Associates or Parks Activities Specialists.
  • Schedule: Flexible hours; may include day, evenings, weekends, or holidays. Hours are not guaranteed each week and can change based on program needs.
  • Location: Jobs are at different Community Centers around Portland. When you apply you can choose as many Community Centers as you want to work at.
Pay and Benefits
  • Parks Activities Specialist Pay: Training pay is $19.04;
    Instructor I $19.04–$22.21;
    Instructor II $21.16–$28.03; USA Gymnastics certified instructors may receive a wage step increase.
  • Recreation Associate Pay: Training pay is $19.99; base pay for Counselors, Lead Counselors, Attendants, and Customer Service Representatives is $19.99–$23.33 (entry at $19.99);
    Lead Counselor premium $2.00 per hour (included in listed range);
    Lead Counselor base premium information available upon request.
  • Attendant Pay: Base pay $19.99–$23.33;
    Training pay $19.99.
  • Customer Service Representative Pay: Base pay $19.99–$23.33 (entry at $19.99);
    Training pay $19.99.

Individual

Roles and Responsibilities (examples)
  • Counselors:
    Organize, plan, and lead activities (art, crafts, music, sports, etc.), support development, maintain safety and discipline, and keep program records.
  • Attendants:
    Monitor drop-in activities, guest engagement, safety, cleanliness, and documentation; assist with program operations.
  • Customer Service Representatives:
    Provide quality customer service, assist with registrations, facility information, reservations, and payments; support facilities and programs.
  • Instructors:
    Prepare and present lessons in areas such as art, music, dance, sports; maintain safety and records; ensure a welcoming environment.
Qualifications
  • Be able to create a welcoming and friendly environment.
  • Know about the activities in your assigned area.
  • Able to talk and listen well with diverse groups.
  • Able to spot and handle safety and emergency situations.
  • Able to solve problems and assist with customer concerns.
  • Additional Requirements (examples by role)

    Preschool-related roles may require food handler cards or other certifications. Specific locations and shift ranges vary by position and program needs.
