Opportunity

This dental hygienist position qualifies for Loan Repayment Options. The Expanded Practice Registered Dental Hygienist works collaboratively with an integrated care team to provide direct dental hygiene clinical treatment and education in oral health maintenance and prevention to mobile medical clinic patients. The role establishes and implements individualized preventive oral health programs for clinic patients, other interested individuals and organizations. The position offers essential education and prevention services to a culturally diverse population that often has limited prior exposure to modern dental procedures.

The Hygienist helps create a work culture of respect, trust and understanding for the diverse populations served by the Health Department, both in office and in the community. This is a Limited Duration position.

Responsibilities Direct Patient Care
  • Provide clinical dental hygiene services, including prophylaxes, local anesthesia, scaling and root planing, fluoride application, complete periodontal charting, periodontal treatment, exposure and mounting of dental radiographs, placement of dental sealants, blood pressure monitoring, review and signing of paper medical histories, development of treatment plans and chart documentation.
  • Capture and save intraoral diagnostic images as appropriate.
  • Demonstrate and teach oral hygiene methods and develop individualized prevention plans that consider the patient’s physical, mental, and emotional skills and limitations.
  • Administer topical and local anesthesia.
  • Prescribe fluoride and antimicrobial solutions.
  • Work to meet set productivity goals.
Indirect Patient Care
  • Seek clinical consultation from other clinicians as needed for practice management.
  • Provide consultation to other role groups and help prioritize care team activities.
  • Co‑ordinate with behavioral health, pharmacy, medical and dental providers to integrate care.
  • Provide coverage for clinical colleagues when absent.
  • Complete patient documentation and manage electronic inbox per established policies.
  • Follow up on utilization issues, including ED visits, hospital admissions, specialty referrals and consultations.
  • Support integration of Teledentistry in mobile clinic settings.
  • Collaborate closely with mobile clinic team members (medical provider, medical assessment, case manager, etc.).
  • Participate in team, professional, and Health Center‑wide meetings to stay connected to new programs and services benefiting mobile clinic patients.
  • Engage in continuing education to maintain licensure and current evidence‑based practices.
Infection Control/Safety
  • Oversee strict aseptic controls, preventing communicable disease transmission; control use of toxic materials.
  • Maintain chain of infection control during care and charting; assume responsibility for infection control in clinic.
  • Ensure sterilization of all dental equipment for mobile services, including processing and sterilizing instruments per protocol.
  • Complete charting in a timely manner and maintain a safe clinic workplace.
  • Receive safety and health training to perform duties safely.
  • Follow all policies and procedures promoting a safe, health‑ful workplace.
  • Incorporate safe work practices in all tasks and participate in initiatives that enhance safety.
