Shriners Children’s Portland is actively seeking a dedicated and experienced full‑time Pediatric Orthopedic Spine Surgeon to join our renowned team. This role specializes in treating complex spinal deformities in children, with approximately 90% focus on spine care, including early‑onset scoliosis, Mehta casting, and advanced anterior and posterior spinal surgeries. Optional involvement in skeletal dysplasia cases is available. Enjoy a balanced schedule with two clinic days, two operating room days, and one flexible day, plus 1-in‑10 rotating home call.
You’ll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team and contribute to outreach clinics in Redmond, OR, and Vancouver, WA.
As a Pediatric Orthopedic Spine Surgeon at Shriners Children’s Portland, you will play a pivotal role in delivering high‑quality, family‑centered care to pediatric patients with spinal conditions. Your responsibilities will include:
- Conducting clinical assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and personalized treatment planning for children with spinal deformities.
- Providing both surgical and non‑surgical management, adhering to evidence‑based practices and patient‑specific needs.
- Managing inpatient and outpatient care, including preoperative planning, postoperative follow‑up, consultations, and discharge coordination.
- Performing operative procedures in state‑of‑the‑art surgical suites, following institutional protocols and safety standards.
- Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, including pediatricians, physiatrists, physical therapists, anesthesiologists, and other specialists, to ensure seamless, coordinated care.
- Maintaining accurate and timely documentation in our electronic health record system, in full compliance with legal, regulatory, and institutional guidelines.
- Participating in shared call coverage, hospital rounds, and trauma responses as needed.
- Contributing to quality improvement initiatives, peer reviews, and clinical governance processes within the department.
- Engaging in medical education, research, and scholarly activities, leveraging our strong academic partnerships with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and international programs.
- Meeting productivity benchmarks (e.g., wRVUs), quality metrics, and performance standards while balancing clinical, surgical, administrative, and academic duties.
This position offers the opportunity to work in a high‑volume environment supported by Advanced Practice Providers, medical assistants, cast technicians, care managers, psychologists, rehabilitation specialists, hospitalists, and rotating residents and fellows.
RequirementsTo excel in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:
Education:- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical school.
- Completion of an ACGME‑accredited residency in Orthopedic Surgery.
- Fellowship training in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery and Spine Surgery.
- At least 5 years of post‑fellowship experience preferred; recent fellowship graduates may be considered based on exceptional training and clinical exposure.
- Board certification or eligibility in Orthopedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS), with subspecialty certification in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery.
- Eligibility for active, unrestricted medical licensure in Oregon.
- Eligibility for an active DEA license.
- Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS for HCP) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
- Successful credentialing and privileging per hospital bylaws.
Skills:
- In‑depth expertise in pediatric spine conditions, including scoliosis, early‑onset scoliosis, congenital deformities, neuromuscular and syndromic disorders, trauma, and post‑traumatic issues, with consideration for growth and development.
