The Department of Emergency Medicine at OHSU is home to over 150 faculty and adjunct faculty under the direction of Mary Tanski, M.D., M.B.A., Associate Professor and Department Chair. Our clinician staff serves OHSU’s Level 1 Trauma Center, Doernbecher Pediatric ED, and three community Emergency Departments (Hillsboro Medical Center, Adventist Health Portland, and Columbia Memorial Hospital), three ED Observation Units, the Immediate Care Virtual Visits Program, and the Oregon Poison Center.
The department is highly ranked for NIH‑funded research and hosts the Center for Policy and Research in Emergency Medicine (CPR‑EM). Our residency program trains 33 residents and offers a diverse training environment through partnerships at several area hospitals. OHSU offers EM specialty training via select fellowships in Research, Education, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Administration, EMS, Toxicology, and Ultrasound. / Duties
- Act as an attending physician in the Emergency Department, including the ED Observation Unit and Pediatric Emergency Services, as assigned by the Chair.
- Participate in education of medical and paramedic students, house staff, and nurses.
- Engage in Emergency Department quality‑assurance activities and provide online medical consultation.
- Evaluate, diagnose, perform history and physical examinations, and initially treat patients presenting to the emergency department with any symptom, illness, injury, or condition.
- Stabilize patients with major illnesses or injuries and assess all patients to determine if additional care is necessary.
- Perform other administrative and clinical duties as assigned based on department needs and areas of expertise, including opportunities to participate in departmental management and serve on institutional committees.
- Education: MD or equivalent;
Emergency Medicine Residency Certificate. - Experience: Knowledge, training, and experience in clinical and academic Emergency Medicine.
- Demonstrated ability to satisfy standards of performance delineated by law.
- Ability to manage a heavy workload with multiple priorities and inflexible deadlines.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency with computing hardware and software, including personal computing equipment, electronic medical records, word processing, and spreadsheet software.
- Regular and consistent attendance at work.
- ABEM or ABOEM Board‑certified or board‑eligible.
- Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required if not yet board‑certified (no longer required once certification is obtained).
- Current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certification required, having been completed at least once, even when board‑certified.
- Current unlimited Oregon MD (or equivalent) license prior to start date; completion of the credentialing process and approval by the OHSU Professional Board to practice independently in an acute‑care/emergency setting.
- Federal Drug Administration registration and authorization to prescribe medications prior to the start date.
