Position: Assistant Professor (Sustainability)

Overview

Portland State University wishes to hire a full-time Assistant Professor in Architecture to teach courses in Sustainable Design, Technology, and Design Studio. Candidates will be expected to integrate the relationship between sustainable design and technology through creative teaching strategies while bringing critical perspectives and innovative practices. The appointment includes advising and mentoring. Additional opportunities exist through a variety of resources, including the Center for Public Interest Design.

The school has designed its pedagogy upon a creative engagement with the prevailing realities of the city as a primary means of cultural transformation and perceives Portland as a laboratory for speculations into contemporary social and environmental issues. Through interaction and collaboration with the communities at large, the school promotes theoretical exploration, critical dialogue and interpretive making with diverse media at multiple scales.

Portland State University School of Architecture offers a NAAB-accredited professional two-year Master of Architecture degree, a three-year track Master of Architecture, a four-year pre-professional undergraduate degree in architecture, and Graduate Certificates in Public Interest Design and Urban Design. The candidate must be able to teach effectively across all levels and be fully engaged in the innovation of pedagogic strategies and curricular development.

The responsibilities include teaching Sustainable Design, Technology, and Design Studio; advising and mentoring students; and contributing to curricular development and innovation. The position also provides opportunities to engage with resources such as the Center for Public Interest Design and to participate in creative and community-oriented projects.

Qualifications
  • Minimum requirement: master’s degree in architecture.
  • At least three years of teaching experience, including sustainable design and design studio.
  • Ability to articulate a research/creative agenda that expands the scholarly field of architecture and enriches the school’s pedagogy.
