LOCATION: Centennial High School
HOURS: 7 Hours per day (7:45 am – 3:15 pm)
CALENDAR: 192 days per year (Approx.) – August to June
SALARY: $20.62 – $28.54 per hour (Range

JOB PURPOSE STATEMENT(S): The role assists a certificated teacher in planning and implementing instructional and behavioral programs for students with moderate to severe learning and physical disabilities, special social/behavioral, cultural, and language needs. Duties include one‑on‑one and small group instruction, tutoring, testing assistance, and clerical support. The assistant works under teacher guidance and is evaluated periodically.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS- Assist in planning and implementing learning experiences for students enrolled in the program.
- Consult with teacher(s) to provide feedback on student performance during tutorial and testing activities.
- Interpret Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and related instructional and behavioral plans within guidelines set by the certificated teacher.
- Instruct students in small group and one‑on‑one settings.
- Revise lesson plans or teaching strategies during instruction as necessary to achieve IEP goals and objectives.
- Help students develop positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults.
- Promote student safety by helping them develop skills.
- Interpret and implement a behavior‑management program; train and assist students in behavior management.
- Provide education regarding appropriate interpersonal actions; respond to discipline problems; act as a role model.
- Work as a team member with classroom related service staff and outside agencies to implement individual plans for students.
- Attend in‑service and workshop training related to the assignment and apply training to instructional responsibilities.
- Perform general clerical duties including writing attendance reports, grading papers, and maintaining accurate files.
- Assist with communication between students, teachers, and parents as requested.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Experience Preferred: Prior experience working with students of special needs, especially in autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and emotional disturbance.
Skills, Knowledge and/or Abilities
Required:
- Strong English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
- Knowledge of modern office methods, practices, procedures, and equipment; computer hardware and software proficiency.
- Understanding of IDEA provisions and ability to rapidly acquire such knowledge.
- Proper childcare techniques and student supervision and classroom management skills for moderate to severe learning, physical disabilities, and social/behavioral problems.
- Ability to work effectively in physically and emotionally demanding settings; practice empathy with students’ disabilities.
- Knowledge of growth and development principles for students with special needs.
- Basic first aid and safety knowledge; teamwork skills; typing speed sufficient for job duties; clear oral and written communication; ability to establish effective working relationships.
- Instructional delivery for students with moderate to severe learning and physical disabilities and/or social/behavioral problems; ability to manage aggressive behavior as required; readiness for basic feeding and personal hygiene support as required; interpret IEPs independently; NVCI training or intent to complete training; attend required trainings specific to student needs.
- Second language spoken preferred.
Education Required: One of the following:
- Completed two years of college.
- Hold a two‑year degree.
- Hold a state or local “No Child Left Behind” certification.
Licenses, Bonding, and/or Testing
Required:
Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance (applicant agrees to assume cost upon offer of employment).
Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
EVALUATIONPerformance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board’s policy on evaluation of support staff personnel.
