Parkrose SD 3 Parkrose Middle School – Portland, Oregon
Job OverviewThe position of Speech & Language Pathologist is to administer hearing or speech/language evaluations, tests, or examinations to students; collect data on impairments; develop goals for Individual Education Plans (IEPs); and implement interventions to remediate identified communication disorders.
EssentialJob Responsibilities
- Develop and implement IEP goals for areas including articulation, stuttering, delayed language, social/cognitive skills, swallowing disorders, and voice problems.
- Evaluate hearing and speech/language test results to determine special‑education eligibility and plan interventions through IEPs.
- Instruct students in techniques for effective communication, including articulation, expressive/receptive language skills, social/cognitive and pragmatic skills, fluency, sign language, augmentative/assistive support, lipreading, and voice improvement.
- Monitor student progress, adjust interventions, and record evaluation data, IEPs, progress reports, and special‑education paperwork required for Medicaid billing.
- Refer students for additional services or medical evaluation when needed.
- Consult with teachers and staff on speech, language, or hearing topics such as communication strategies and language stimulation.
- Conduct lessons and direct therapeutic games to support teachers dealing with speech/language problems.
- Develop individual or group programs and instruct students and families in strategies to improve communication and reduce negative behaviors.
- Participate in conferences and educational plans with teachers, counselors, and special‑education staff.
- Advise parents or legal guardians about student progress and reinforce classroom goals in the home environment.
- Collaborate with school personnel, parents, and community agencies to improve student outcomes and plan curriculum.
- Assist other teachers in implementing curriculum and behavior support.
- Direct educational assistants, volunteers, and student aides to provide an effective program.
- Participate in district‑sponsored in‑service offerings and PLC meetings.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Maintain regular attendance, punctuality, and confidentiality of student information.
- Work includes standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing stairs as needed.
- Valid Oregon teaching certificate with appropriate endorsement; maintenance of license and required credits.
- If the posting is within the CORE academic area, designation as highly qualified by TSPC and the State of Oregon.
- Ability to prepare effectively for class, develop and communicate grading standards, maintain positive interpersonal relationships, document student progress, and knowledge of appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code, and multicultural competency.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance and First Aid/CPR/AED certification or ability to obtain.
- Bilingual.
- Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies, RTI, Sheltered Instruction/SIOP, Differentiated Instruction.
- Experience working with diverse students.
$52,278 to $101,991 per year. Employer‑paid retirement and a generous benefits package.
