Job Summary

The University of Portland located in Portland, Oregon, USA invites applications for a faculty position as a One-Year Visiting Instructor in the School of Education to begin August 15, 2026. Areas of instruction may include the following:

Initial and Advanced Educator Licensing

* Foundational literacy emphasizing the science of reading for preservice elementary teachers

* Second language development and general education support for multi-lingual learners

* Reading endorsement courses for practicing teachers preparing for reading interventionist roles

* Cognition and human development (pre-adolescent and adolescent) for preservice teachers

The University of Portland is a primarily undergraduate institution comprising four professional schools and the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), which houses our strong liberal arts Core Curriculum, required of all students. The University Core provides students in all disciplines a unifying set of experiences and promotes engagement with the Six Core Habits of Heart and Mind, which include "Global and Historical Consciousness" and "Commitment to Diversity, Inclusion, and the Common Good."

The School of Education prepares teachers and school leaders to educate the whole person in the tradition of the Holy Cross. The School prepares individuals at all stages of their careers to become exceptional professional educators who teach and lead. As the premier program in the Portland metropolitan area, the School partners with over 100 schools and 18 school systems, offering an undergraduate degree and several graduate programs for baccalaureate- and master's-prepared educators.

All programs within the School of Education are designed to include a sequence of courses and field work that focus on student learning and development, pedagogical knowledge, an understanding of cultural and special needs diversity, the use of technological skills, an integration of foundational theory with practice, and a strong emphasis on reflection and inquiry.

Core Duties

University of Portland faculty teach, advise, and serve the School and the University. The successful candidate will teach in-person and online graduate and undergraduate courses in the School of Education and will demonstrate a commitment to excellent teaching, including attention to evidence-based instructional practices. Teaching responsibilities include four 3-credit hour courses (or equivalent) per semester. Duties of the position include:

* Teach assigned education courses using evidence-based instruction practices.

* Provide a supportive learning environment and facilitate effective student learning.

* Adhere to course curricula, methods, practices, and lesson plans as developed by the School of Education.

* Adhere to University and School of Education policies and processes related to class instruction, including but not limited to syllabus requirements.

* Conduct regular student assessments and provide timely graded feedback including homework, quizzes, and exams.

* Access the online learning system and other network resources to assign homework, communicate with students, complete grading and other assessment tasks.

* Conduct student meetings by holding regular office hours outside of regularly scheduled class time.

Education & Experience

* Required:

Master's degree in education.

* Required:

Teaching or instructional experience.

* Preferred:
Doctoral degree in education.

* Preferred:
Experience in higher education in teacher preparation or with in-service educators.

Certifications & Licenses

* Required:

Qualifies for or has an active or recent Oregon educator license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Demonstrated effectiveness in inclusive and student-centered teaching and mentoring.

* Strong orientation towards continued learning and applying learning in the teaching environment.

* Evidence of a commitment to teaching and student mentoring.

* Competence with and commitment to inclusive excellence; ability to be an effective partner with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
