Position Overview
The Director of Faculty Affairs & Academic Personnel Department is a full‑time, unclassified, unrepresented position reporting to the Vice Provost for Faculty Success. This role serves as a key thought partner, providing direct and confidential assistance to the Vice Provost and other academic leaders. The position supports campus‑wide operations related to academic personnel, including promotion, tenure, faculty hiring, and other personnel matters, and delivers leadership development for department chairs and deans.
Key ResponsibilitiesThis position requires understanding and navigating the university’s administrative systems and policies, including Oregon Administrative Rules, Portland State University policies, and collective bargaining agreements. Responsibilities include prioritizing and managing multiple projects and deadlines, working effectively in a team, initiating proactive problem‑solving, ensuring confidentiality, compliance with policies and labor contracts, and maintaining productive professional relationships.
Minimum Qualifications- Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and 6+ years of professional experience in higher education with employment‑related processes.
- Experience working with People Admin or other HR position‑management software.
- Experience with Banner, Cognos, or other centralized HR information systems.
- Professional writing and presentation skills.
- Proficient in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Workspace.
- Master’s degree in higher education management or related field with 4+ years of experience in higher education employment processes.
- Experience in promotion, recruitment, and retention practices for academic employees, especially faculty.
- Experience with classification and compensation philosophies.
- Experience in policy and/or compliance practice development and implementation.
- Experience working in a unionized environment.

Work Days/HoursMonday – Friday, 40 hours per week, schedule to be determined.
Total Compensation and BenefitsThe starting annual salary will be between $74,232 and $98,364, with potential negotiation above this range based on experience and institutional factors. Benefits include 95% premium‑paid healthcare, a generous retirement and vacation package, and reduced tuition rates for employee families at Oregon University System schools.
