Child peace Montessori School is seeking a Lower Elementary Classroom Assistant to support a classroom of 6‑ to 9‑year‑olds. The Assistant will help the Head Teacher with individual student support, administrative tasks, classroom maintenance, playground supervision, and tasks that promote the well‑being of the classroom community. Montessori training will be provided upon hire.
The ideal candidate has or is completing a Bachelor’s degree, strong communication and organizational skills, prior experience working with elementary‑age children, embraces teamwork, and brings a positive, kind spirit. Art/music abilities, physical education/movement skills, or facility with Spanish are a plus.
Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a school‑year, hourly, non‑exempt position eligible for benefits (medical, dental, vision insurance, and more).
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Help children learn skills and processes for independent care of the environment.
- Track attendance of students.
- Create materials as directed by the Guide. Report any damaged materials to the Guide.
- Perform any needed tasks such as carpools, tracking schedules, or other duties assigned by the Guide in support of the classroom.
- Understand communal chore schedules in conjunction with other Elementary and school staff.
- Model graceful and respectful behavior.
- In conjunction with the Guide, plan and implement a sound outdoor program for the children, monitor playground/green space for safety, and introduce new games and activities.
- Chaperone children during field trips and overnight camping trips.
- Support the children’s classroom work in a manner directed by the Guide and in such a way as to not interfere with the children’s independence and concentration.
- As directed by the Guide, provide individual support to children, including reading, practicing math facts, helping with research or information gathering, or supporting scaffolding for children with special needs.
- Assist children with conflict resolution and problem‑solving skills.
- Attend camping trips and assist with chaperone responsibilities while students are at camp.
- Develop an approach to discipline issues consistent with the Guide, the school, and Montessori philosophy.
- Use positive phrasing of directives with children and observe other staff members for appropriate language.
- Report to the Guide and Administrator or office any accidents that occur in the class or on the playground and complete any necessary accident/incident report form.
- Report to the Guide any abnormal or troublesome incidents.
- Be aware of safety issues in conduct of the group and surroundings; administer first aid when needed.
- When moving groups from one location to another or when on an outing, take a head‑count upon departure and arrival.
- Represent the classroom community positively and professionally at drop‑off/pick‑up times and at classroom and community events.
- Answer housekeeping questions for parents, when appropriate, but mainly refer questions, comments, or messages to the Guide or Program Director/HOS as necessary.
- Adhere to professional protocol and school policies in all interactions with parents. Maintain appropriate professional boundaries, demonstrate good judgment when forming social connections with parents outside the professional relationship.
- Complete 24 hours of documented, relevant professional development each calendar year.
- Prioritize attendance at parent education events.
- Read the Staff Handbook and Parent Handbook and agree to adhere to all Child peace Montessori School policies.
- Six months of experience in educational work or the equivalent.
- High school diploma required;
Bachelor’s degree preferred. - Knowledge of normal developmental needs and tendencies of elementary‑aged children.
- Background check / enrollment in the Central Background Registry.
- Food Handler Card.
- CPR / First Aid.
- Recognizing & Reporting Child Abuse & Neglect.
Elementary activities require frequent shifts between sitting, walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling. Must be able to run with children or run to them quickly as needed. Frequent reaching and use of hands, including lifting items under 10 pounds. Possibly need to lift a child under 100 pounds. Close, distance, and peripheral vision are important for observing children and ensuring their safety.
Regular verbal communication with children and adult staff.
