Calendar: 190 days per year (prorated based on start date)
Salary: $20.67 – $28.61 per hour (Range
D)

The job of Educational Assistant is to assist a certificated teacher in the planning and implementation of instructional programs for students. Employees perform paraprofessional duties in settings where special instructional programs and teaching techniques address moderate to severe learning and physical disabilities, special social/behavioral, cultural, and language needs, or instruction in academic, technical, vocational, or gifted programs. This can be accomplished through one‑on‑one and small group instruction and tutoring;
and may include assistance in testing students and performing a variety of clerical duties. Some positions require aptitude in working with the particular disability or learning needs of the students. The position of Program Assistant monitors student behavior during playground, cafeteria, detention, or street‑crossing activities; and performs clerical duties in support of instructional activities.
- Assist in planning and implementing learning experiences for students enrolled in the program.
- Confer with teacher(s) to provide feedback on student performance in tutorial and testing activities.
- Interpret Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and related instructional plans within guidelines set by the certificated teacher.
- Instruct students in small group and one‑on‑one settings.
- Revise lesson plan or teaching strategy during instructional activity as necessary to achieve IEP goals and objectives.
- Conduct student testing using prescribed test batteries; correct tests, record scores, and inform teacher of any unusual academic or disciplinary problems.
- Help students develop positive interpersonal relationships with peers and adults.
- Promote student safety by helping them develop self‑confidence.
- Interpret and implement a behavior management program; train and assist students in behavior management.
- Provide education regarding appropriate interpersonal actions; respond to discipline problems; act as a role model.
- Attend in‑service and workshop training related to area of assignment and apply training to instructional responsibilities.
- Perform general clerical duties, including writing attendance reports, grading papers, and maintaining accurate files.
- Assist, as requested, in communication between students, teachers, and parents.
- Perform basic first aid, make initial assessment of medical emergencies, and summon appropriate medical response.
- Assist other personnel as may be required to support them in completing their work activities.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Experience Preferred: Prior job‑related experience working with students of special needs; some child‑supervision experience desirable.
- Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Strong English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Ability to work with students of varying skill levels, monitor student activities and behavior, and intervene constructively.
- Patient, effective work with students, including those with behavioral problems and mild learning disabilities.
- Clear oral and written communication.
- Basic computer skills and office procedures.
- Understanding of PL 94‑142 provisions and ability to acquire related knowledge.
- Knowledge of child‑care techniques, first aid, and safety requirements.
- Ability to work in a team setting.
- Typing speed sufficient for job needs.
- Education Required:
- Completed two years of college, or hold a two‑year degree, or hold a state or local “No Child Left Behind” certification.
- Licenses, Bonding, and Testing: Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance (applicant agrees to assume cost upon offer). First aid and CPR card required or ability to obtain.
Salary and work year to be established by the Board.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Support Staff Personnel.
