Extended Day Teacher - PS & K
The Extended Day Teacher - PS & K designs and leads activities after school for our preschool and kindergarten students in the Village classroom. This teacher is familiar with progressive education, with an interest in Reggio-Emilia inspired classrooms and emergent curriculum. The Extended Day teacher works in collaboration with the Preschool teaching assistant to foster an inclusive, caring environment that promotes independence, agency and the development of social emotional skills.
EssentialResponsibilities
Extended Day
- Organize and develop the Extended Day program of activities for students in grades Preschool and Kindergarten in partnership with the Preschool teaching assistant.
- Design a program that effectively supports students and fosters an environment aligned with Catlin Gabel's progressive pedagogical approach, emphasizing student voice, choice, and agency.
- Cultivate an inclusive, equitable environment where students experience a sense of belonging and agency.
- Design and maintain an engaging classroom space, carefully choosing materials and activities that are age-appropriate, open-ended and student led.
- Provide behavior support through a progressive, restorative framework, guiding students to navigate social conflicts as opportunities for learning rather than disciplinary incidents.
- Serve as a critical link between home and school, ensuring the after-school experience is reflective of the family-school partnership.
- Ensure the safe operation of the program and maintain compliance with the State of Oregon Child Care Rules.
- Maintain effective communication with staff, parents, students, school colleagues, facilities personnel, and the business office of the school.
- Complete all required Human Resources trainings annually (e.g., CPR, first aid, mandatory reporting, handling of hazardous materials).
Additional Roles
- Assist Beginning School specialist teacher with preschool class at least twice a week from 2:00-3:00pm.
- Design activities for Day Camps in collaboration with the Preschool teaching assistant and the Extended Learning Asst Director. Day Camps occur twice a semester, with optional additional work hours from 9:00am-5:30pm.
- Opportunities to be a substitute teaching assistant during the school day from 8:00am-2:00pm.

Education and Experience
- BA or BS from an accredited college or university, preferably in education, early childhood, child development, or recreation.
- At least one year of experience leading a preschool or kindergarten children's program
Working Environment and Physical Requirements

Work is primarily performed in a classroom setting with occasional to frequent work leading students off campus activities.
- Requires ability to traverse campus to accompany and ensure the safety of children
- This may include moving up and down stairs or hill between facilities multiple times throughout the workday
- Frequent bending, squatting, stooping and kneeling
- Occasional lifting of 30-50 pounds
- This position combines daily active movement in classroom and after school doing lesson preparation, directs attention to children (as necessary), and in stationary position participating collaborative meetings 30%-40% of the time
Schedule
The Extended Day Teacher's work hours are 2:00-6:00pm Monday-Thursday, and 1:00-6:00pm on Friday. If available, the Extended Day teacher may work from 9:00am-5:30pm when Day Camps are in session.
