Job Overview
Portland Parks & Recreation is recruiting part‑time staff for the Teen Force program. Positions are flexible, Monday to Friday afternoons and evenings, with occasional weekends, across multiple community centers.
Open Positions- Teen Force Counselor (age 15+)
- Teen Force Lead Counselor (age 18+)
- General Instructor II (Parks Activities Specialist) (age 18+)
- Fitness Instructor (Parks Activities Specialist) (age 18+)
- Specialized Arts Instructor (Parks Activities Specialist) (age 18+)
Training pay is $20.59 for counselors and $19.61 for instructors. Base pay ranges from $20.59 to $28.87 for counselors and $21.79 to $41.40 for instructors. Lead Counselors receive a $2.00 leadership premium.
Responsibilities- Counselors organize, plan, and lead a variety of activities—art, crafts, music, performance, science, games, nature, sports—supporting the physical, social, and cognitive development of participants, maintain discipline and safety, model appropriate behavior, maintain accurate program records, and perform maintenance duties.
- Lead Counselors provide direction and coaching to counselors, assist with program leadership, and support counselors in the duties above.
- General Instructors plan lessons and deliver instruction for general recreation activities including art, music, cooking, movement, dance, gymnastics, and sports.
- Fitness Instructors lead group fitness classes and ensure safe and effective exercise instruction.
- Specialized Arts Instructors lead private and group lessons in specialized art forms—music, jewelry, theatre, textiles, photography, drawing, printmaking, book arts, ballet, dance, woodshop, sculpture, ceramics—including culturally specific styles.
- Teen Force Program staff lead drop‑in activities, provide guidance and direction, and promote a welcoming environment for youths aged 10‑20.
- High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Knowledge and understanding of the Teen Force program.
- USA Gymnastics certified instructors are eligible for a wage step increase.
Counselor positions are represented by the LiUNA Local 483 union; instructor positions are not unionized.
Community center locations include Charles Jordan, East Portland, Matt Dishman, Montavilla, Mt. Scott, and Southwest Community Centers.
