Edison High School is dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, and community-based learning environment for students with learning differences. We are seeking a qualified and engaging American Sign Language (ASL) Teacher II to teach ASL II and support student growth.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- Teach ASL II with the goal of helping students progress toward Intermediate Mid proficiency
, consistent with American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) standards. - Develop students' ability to communicate in ASL through original sentences and simple conversations in familiar, informal settings.
- Create and maintain an engaging, interactive, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student participation and confidence.
- Differentiate instruction and provide appropriate support for students with a range of learning differences, including dyslexia, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorders.
- Employ effective and flexible classroom management strategies that support a positive, structured, and respectful learning environment.
- Plan and deliver instruction using effective language-learning strategies, including Comprehensible Input when appropriate.
- Coordinate and collaborate with the other ASL teacher on curriculum development, instructional practices, course sequencing, and assessment.
- Maintain accurate daily attendance and student grades using Power School.
- Use Canvas to organize and communicate assignments, resources, and course materials.
- Communicate proactively and professionally with administrators, faculty, and student support staff to ensure students' academic and social-emotional needs are appropriately supported.
- Serve as an advisor/homeroom teacher, supporting students with organization, self-advocacy, communication, and social skill development.
- Facilitate an end-of-day homework support session four days per week.
- Attend and actively participate in weekly faculty meetings and department meetings.
- Participate in two all-school retreats each year.
- Support the broader Edison community by participating in school events and activities, which may include annual fundraising events, student dances, parent/student conferences, and other community activities.
- Establish positive and productive relationships with students, families, colleagues, and members of the Edison community.
- Teach a quarter-length elective course at the discretion of the Principal.
- Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned by the school.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree or higher, with a degree in education or equivalent classroom experience.
- Fluency in American Sign Language, demonstrated through an ASLPI, interview, or equivalent assessment.
- Experience teaching American Sign Language, preferably at the high school level.
- Experience working with students with learning differences.
- Experience using Comprehensible Input and other effective language-learning strategies.
- Oregon Professional Teaching License issued by TSPC, or a teaching license from another state, preferred.
- ASLTA certification preferred.
- Principles, theories, methods, techniques, and strategies for teaching ASL to high school students with learning differences.
- Educational trends and best practices in curriculum development and instructional strategies for high school ASL programming.
- Academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of high school students.
- Effective classroom management techniques.
- Plan, organize, develop, and effectively deliver a comprehensive ASL curriculum.
- Create an inclusive and culturally responsive classroom that provides an effective and stimulating learning experience for students with learning differences.
- Assess the educational needs of individual students and utilize innovative strategies to enhance student success.
- Review, analyze, evaluate, and communicate students' academic, social, and emotional growth with school counselors and families.
- Build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues through clear, open, and effective communication.
- Thrive in a close-knit community while working respectfully with students, families, and staff from diverse backgrounds, identities, and abilities.
- Demonstrate optimism, resilience, and a commitment to personal and professional growth.
- Serve as an inspiring and motivating role model for students and colleagues.
- Valid secondary teaching license from any state in the United States is preferred.
- First Aid and CPR Certificate.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint and Background Clearance.
- This position reports to the Principal of Edison High School.
- This is a full-time position.
- Approximate Salary: $47,000-$74,000 reflects a Bachelor's degree with 2 – 15 years of experience. Exact salary will be based on experience and education at the time of hire.
