Therapeutic Relationships Instructor - Fall Term
October 3 - December 19;
Saturdays 12:30pm to 3:30pm.
Position Overview
Students will examine the role and effects of touch, cultural differences regarding touch, personal touch history, strategies for establishing trust and emotional responses to touch. They learn about the legal and ethical requirements for massage therapists, including licensing regulations, standards of practice, scope of practice and professionalism. In addition, students explore the issues that contribute to effective communication with clients, including setting boundaries, active listening, assertive communication, managing transference and counter transference.
Throughout the course, students work on developing professionalism, therapeutic presence and self-care skills.
Primary Responsibilities
- Deliver an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed to develop successful client-therapist relationships.
- Assess student learning through various methods including quizzes and homework assignments.
- Maintain accurate records of student attendance, grades, and progress.
- Provide regular feedback and support to students.
- Collaborate with other faculty to ensure integration of course concepts across the massage therapy curriculum.
Required Qualifications
- Applicants must be an LMT with active license and a minimum of 2 years' practical massage experience OR a licensed mental healthcare provider.
- Experience teaching
-OR- a strong interest in teaching massage therapy students. - Must be able to demonstrate the appropriate knowledge or expertise to teach Therapeutic Relationships class.
- Strong understanding of adult learning principles and teaching methodologies.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse student population.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching in a massage therapy program.
- Strong discussion facilitation skills.
- Knowledge of current research in massage therapy and bodywork.
